Pilot Blue- Black

This is the perfect "blue jeans of ink" - very water resistant (though not totally water proof- some color will bleed/feather and some will bleed through to the other side but most will stay perfectly on the page), flows well so far in every pen I've put it in and doesn't have a tendency to dry or clog (although I haven't been using it long enough to see if there are any long term issues).

It displays a surprising amount of shading on paper that isn't particularly absorbent, and although I have yet to see the sheen on paper there is definitely some sheen (I've seen it on my hands when I managed to make a mess inking a pen, and I see it on the feeds of my pens).

I bought it specifically to use in one pen and I currently have three pens inked with it- it succeeds where other inks fail, and I'm a sucker for blue-black.

One warning I have is that I suspect this ink is a stainer- I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't put it in direct contact with a transparent pen unless I was willing to risk staining as it left a blue stain on the plastic syringe I used to transfer some to a smaller container in a matter of about 30 seconds. I didn't try very hard to get the stain off of the syringe, because I don't care about it, but if it did that in seconds I imagine sitting inside a pen could leave a lasting mark.

Shown on Staples ARC paper.

A solid no-nonsense ink. Thank you for reminding us of its existence. My little bottle is often overlooked for some reason or another

Solid no-nonsense ink is my favorite kind of ink, really. There's another ink that I really want to love that seems to cause mayhem in any pen I try it in- last night after some advanced mayhem and about an hour getting the pen to write again, I replaced it with Pilot BB and saw immediate improvement. I can see myself buying the big soda-bottle type bottles of this ink. It's a keeper.

I don't need complete waterproofness but I do expect and demand to still be able to read my notes after an early morning coffee accident (or a late night beer accident). This ink does this for me, and I have no issue writing checks etc with it either. No worries, no nonsense, no fuss.

It does spectacularly stain one's hands though, and my cuticles have been "pilot blue black" for a week now. That's at least 75% my fault, but I am amazed at its tenacity. And somehow, I have a spot of it on each arm. I really don't know HOW that happened- alcohol may have been involved. But it really sticks around on skin, so if you care about that, caution and gloves are in order. I seem to be a magnet for this stuff, I've never managed to get any other ink all over me this often. :D

This is a great ink. It's one of the staples in my ink drawer. Thanks for your review.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

Have the 350 ml bottle of this.

So, yeah, I like this blue-black. Then again, I find that I like most of the standard Pilot inks as everyday workhorse inks.

Hi,

Perhaps that wee bottle is overshadowed by the bottle of Pelikan Edelstein Topaz? :bunny01:

Bye,

Wow! This is a very nice blue-black with a overwhelming sheen! Why did I not take it into account so far? I don't know, but it seem that I have underestimated it! My standard is Sailor blue black and I will test it against it. Thank you for this illuminative review.

  • 8 months later...

The ink bug bit me badly, and I now have at least a half dozen blue blacks and I now have 8 different blue blacks that I've tried in various pens. Though many of them are more expensive than Pilot Blue Black, I keep coming back to this is my everyday favorite ink. I concur with all of the properties mentioned earlier in this thread, and am firmly in the camp of viewing this as the greatest price/performance value in blue blacks that is reliable in every pen I've tried.

The only thing I'd add is with respect to the question of whether it's a "stainer". As another person mentioned, it loves to stain my fingers; however, I've tried it in several demonstrators including a Pilot Custom Heritage 92, TWSI 580, and several cheap Jinhao 992s and it has always cleaned up easily.

i have only found it to leave residue if its in a spot that is left to dry, and unlikely to stain in a spot that is always wet, like in a piston filler.

Yeah I was surprised how much sheen PBB has, this is on Tomoe river.

PBB has a good reputation for being a very good EDC ink.

Out of curiosity, what pens were used for this glorious display of Pilot Blue black? And how wet was it?
