Noodler's 54Th Massachusetts

Had some cheap, off white copy paper from Staples (75g), so I used it to test some of my sample of Noodler's 54th Massachusetts in my Pilot Metropolitan (fine nib). This is considered a "bulletproof" ink, but I did not shoot it to test that.

My observations:

Dry time - very quick on this paper, rather quick on any paper I have used. I tried a smear test, but the 1 second smear didn't smear at all.

Flow - when it's going, it goes. It doesn't skip, but occasionally will have a short bit left blank when I start. By start, I mean start the next letter. I would be wary of leaving this in an uncapped pen, or any pen not easily cleaned. Ink was quite visible on the surface of the nib, as well.

Echo/Bleed - did not bleed for me. This paper showed no real echo, but copy paper at work showed a little.

Water resistance - water affected the paper, but not the ink. Managed a hint of a smear on some other paper, but I don't think the ink was quite dry when I tested it, so it's not a fair test.

That sounds pretty encouraging. I have wanted to get some of this ink for some time. If I had a little flow issue with this sometimes, I would just wet the nib. That sounds like it is probably no worse than many modern pens themselves, where they get dried out. A little wetting should get it going. This ink looks like something I would enjoy.

I didn't think I'd like 54th MA when I tried it, because it leaned teal. But there was just something about the ink. Then I got a full bottle, and that was a LOT lighter and bluer than the sample had been.

Still, I like it's permanence.

54th Mass. has a reputation for being troublesome & for turning to a gel.

I haven't experienced that but mine faded in the bottle from dark blue to a pale washy-washy blue. Here's the photo from my post in another thread on FPN.

Interesting; had the same experience. Sample was a dark blue, but the ink from the bottle (same pen & paper) was lighter, more of a blue-grey. Nice color, but not what I expected

yup

now i feel there is a certain "ruggedness" feel about the ink.

Can't explain it

BUT i like it now

Strange: my experience was the opposite. Lighter blue in the sample and a teal leaning very dark blue in the full bottle.
