... Leather Wrapped Stone ...

TMLee

Recommended Posts

I'm well past 30, but maybe there is still hope for me. I'll be in Singapore in August for a cousin's wedding, and I'm sure I will be given many " opportunities " to acquire a taste.

Here is my pet rock dressed in variegated cotton thread from Valdani. This was a terrible choice for someone who had never tried to crochet before, the hook I used was so small I felt like I was using a sewing needle.

I don't seem to be able to attach more than one photo per post, so apologies for the double post. Here is the back:

Nice,

thanks for posting.

can explore further possibilities like different coloured threads,

or different kinds of threads/ropes like maybe hemp, raffia etc ,

or combining with other materials ...

or even leather cords wound tightly round it.

:D

TMLee: I started making a graph of the stones with the writing patterns. I need more time to distinguish them, and draw them, because it involves making the webpage bigger, check with the magnifier, find the spot on the diagram, mark it, then draw the letters, checking multiple time for accuracy. The last point, being a habit of history buffs and historians. It is such a wonderous find, they wanted to be part of an artist workshop! .

Gee, don't trouble yourself too much on my account ..

I can imagine it can be quite exciting to discover and uncover things ...

He did a baseball like kind of stitch, to preserve the shape of the stone.

I think he made a good decision becos this stone has irregular outlines, some jagged , etc unlike say river pebbles with regular outlines where its okay to break that outline with the traditional saddle stitch - which is BTW also easier to execute.

For this stitch, he had to stitch temporarily at strategic corners, to hold the leather from sliding out of position.

Then start the actual stitch , ending at where the temporary stitches would then have to be removed, knotting the ends and hiding them.

The blackened stains are water stains to help the leather hug and conform to the stone which has bulges and depressions here and there.

Just love the smell of leather.

This one is not thick leather but thinner 0.5mm to 0.8mm?

Like for wallets.

Those beautiful pieces, indeed wanted to be yours.

The last picture shows, how well the stone tool fits in your hand, like it was cut for you, all those millennia ago.

I loved finding the first patterns on the stone, then I found even more after the first sketch, and yet, more after writing the last post.

I think I have to make the sketch bigger, it is thrilling to find the signs and document them. I like to be accurate, so it will take some times.

And it is also, mid month, household paperwork organizing time, which is mostly making sure that no bill or, important announcement, was lost in the junk mailings that looks like business correspondence.

Chores before fun.

Thanks again, for sharing the beautiful pictures!

  • 2 months later...

This is the other stone I picked up from the Dead Sea months ago...

It now has BEAUTIFUL leather wrapped around it.

Crafted by my friend here who has excellent leather crafting skills.

I like his fine workmanship and attention to detail.

The leather is from Japan.

Its premium.

Its very similar to those leather on Design.Y journals.

I wanted a simple saddle stitch,

which he executed very very well , both in terms of choice of sinew and hue ...

and very fine stitching ...

This paperweight can either be used standing up

fpn_1502104427__dscf6547.jpg

or lying down ...

Beautiful leather and beautiful stone ...

Really nice and unique paperweight!

I can see that your other pictures are still inaccessible.

I hope there is a remedy for you to get them back, even if you cannot share them with a third party directly from Photobucket.
