Platinum 3776 Vs. Pilot Custom Heritage 91

I have one question for the owners of Pilot Custom Heritage 74 and 91. Are the nib sections interchangeable? I have a body and a cap of a 91 and I was wondering if I can buy a 74 complete pen and have both bodies.

Yes, the sections swap.

But Wait!!!!! There's more.

Call in the next 5 minutes and you too can swap caps and bodies creating a 71 or a 94.

Be the first on your block to have one and along with your Captain Midnight glow in the dark decoder ring, amaze your family and friends.

Oh so true. I had the section from my 74 in my 91 a couple of days ago. I have also had my 91's cap on my 71's body.

The cap on my 74 was clipped over something too thick and the clip forced the final to break off. I should glue it back together but I can make do swapping things between the 74 and 91.... It would be nice to find a clear demonstrator 74 cap some day to replace the broken one.

Hmmm, you may just end up with both. Pilot nibs are sweet out of the box but smaller (CH91, C74, CH92). They're smooth and have a bit of spring to them. It gives a feeling close to the 18K OMAS nibs. I enjoy it.

The Platinum on the other hand has a larger but stiffer nib compared to the Pilot. I've had to remove the feedback on my 3776 medium nib using a micromesh. But that feedback is a part of how these nibs are tuned just like the how Aurora nibs are claimed to have been tuned intentionally to have some tooth. The 3776 broad nib that I received recently has been fairly smooth out of the box though.

I find the designs on the Japanese pens (lower end) uninspiring and mediocre. Their nibs, however, are second to none.

You are correct. Just checked and the listings are indeed gone. Perhaps all sold, or removed by seller.

Don't congratulated me just yet. I just placed the order. Will see if I actually receive the pen. I'll let you know the outcome.

My 'Platinum 3776 Century' Amazon adventure is now over. As suspected, the suspiciously low price through the new Amazon Marketplace vendor was a scam. This particular scam works for only a few days as everything seems correct until you discover that your "pen" (probably just a postcard) was delivered (purposely) to the wrong address in the wrong state. Although Amazon showed delivery to my address, the USPS tracking showed a delivery address quite different.

These vendors sneak in a scam storefront showing heavily discounted merchandise, grab a few order payments, and then disappear in a couple days, taking their ill-gotten gains with them. Amazon told me that they are always working to prevent this, but it seems that the scammers keep finding new ways to circumvent Amazon's attempts to stop them. Amazon also told me that they will be making some changes soon. No detail as to what these changes might be, or how it might affect Amazon's A-Z Guarantee.

Amazon did refund my money and all ended well. Just be cautious in future, especially if Amazon changes its refund policy for Marketplace purchases.

I experienced exactly the same thing, although I'm still working with Amazon. I don't expect any hassle.

Sorry to hear you both go scammed on that one. I did order a Platinum 3776 SF in blue on Monday and got it yesterday. Its a nice pen but like my 1911S MF a little more. The SF is nice to have though.

Which Japanese brand has the wettest nib? Sailor, Platinum or Pilot?

Depends on the pen. My Pilot Customer 74 in M is really wet, but my Pilot 91 F and 92 FM more on the dry side. My Sailor 1911S MF nib is great for being just right for me. My Platinum 3776 with SF nib is also somewhat dry but I understand the SF is drying them the F or M nib from Platinum. All I can do is report what my pens do....

I like the 91 over the 3776. I just think it looks better

Oops, I got the 2 confused. I don't have the 91, I have the 92. So, in this case, I like the 3776 over the 91

My personal experience using inks from the same company that made the pen has been Pilot the wettest, then Sailor and Platinum too each other close to tell. I would describe all as moderately wet.

BUT remember, it is a very limited sample, about a dozen pens from each of the three companies.

You might prefer a #3776 instead of the #3776 Century; it has a longer section.

The pilots write a tiny bit better, the soft nib is a tad more flexible, and they have the better con-70 converter.

The platinum is cheaper, writes nearly as well, had a MUCH bigger nib (aesthetically it's no contest, platinum nibs are stunning lookers for the price) and comes in a nicer body.

It all comes down to whether or not you value that TINY (but noticeable) improvement in writing over a much, much more handsome pen.

One person's opinion: the seal cap on the Platinum is a nice feature, and it does work. It also writes nicely. That said, I find the 91 much more attractive, built better, and a better writer. For me, it's the best pen it its price range.

I only have the platinum, but I am a fan.

Same here. I have three Century 3776s. Amazing nibs that work great out of the box, are totally reliably and feel good, comfortable shape, and the slip and seal cap really works as advertised. I'm not that big on the design (at least of the standard ones, some special editions look gorgeous but they are too expensive for me) but who cares.

The only bad thing I can say about functionality is that ink doesn't flow so well when using the adapter for standard international cartridges. I have found that I need to use either Platinum cartridges or the converter for optimal writing.

Pilot.

I have a blue w/gt 3776 - bought it for its UEF nib to use in one of my Nakaya Piccolos (working out amazingly; love it!), but my favorite nib is the Pilot CH912 PO.

As for looks, I much prefer the "boring" 91 (or 912). It's a good-looking pen, whereas the 3776 doesn't ring my bells.

If only the Pilot PO nib would fit in a Nakaya Piccolo - that would be functional and aesthetic perfection!

I would go with the Pilot CH912. I enjoy the Falcon too, both F nibs.

Anthony alot of water has passed under the bridge since your original post so your question could well be resolved.

I own both pens both fitted with fine nibs, the fine on the 3776 is markedly fine than the 91, both write nicely from my experience. I find the 91 a more comfortable pen to write with but would prefer a finer fine nib as found on the 3776. The obvious problem from buying online, there is no try before you buy. The 3776 does have a fair degree of feedback when writing, fortunately this does not concern me.

Both very good pens but my opinion is the 91 is slightly ahead because of it feel in hand.
