Pilot Vanishing Point Extra Fine Nib

I am thinking about getting one. This pen's nibs remain exposed all the time even when it is retracted. Doesn't the ink dry out when you leave it overnight? This possibility gives me a moment of pause.

Want to hear the experience from VP users. Thanks.

No problems with dry-out, and I live in a desert, and like to have the house warm in winter... I use it a little every day, but it sits idle for about 9 hours / night with no troubles. (Mine's a fine, but I don't think there will be any difference between EF and F in this area.)

Tmallik: Don't undersand what you mean by nib being exposed all the time? When retracted, the nib is behind a mechanical flap which seems to seal quite well.

I have no unusual drying issues with my EF VP.

As @Orthostylos has pointed out, the Vanishing Point has a 'trapdoor' that closes when the nib is retracted, completely sealing off the nib from air. You can see a close-up of two 'version's of the mechanism in action on this YouTube video:

The mechanism (newer) mechanism featured is the one I have in both my Vanishing Points, and thus far it works flawlessly to keep the nib from drying out.

Mine's a medium nib, but with that it's always started straight off even if unused for three or four days. It's probably my most reliable writer.

I had a look down the throat of my VP to see what kind of spring it had and found it packed with fluff and fibres mixed up with the several shades of ink I've had in there over the past two years. So I rinsed it and put it in an ultrasonic bath. Came up lovely.

But what kind of spring did it have? ;) (And will it complain about you removing its winter coat?)

It had spring No 2, the popular hooked hinge on a flat trapdoor style. I don't believe it's unhappy, despite appearing to stick its tongue out at me, in fact, it seems positively radiant now it's lost its inky beard. It looks two years younger!

Thank you all friends, you answered my question. The trap door isn't clear from the description. I am going to get one.

I ADORE this pen. If you're concerned about the Pilot VP nib drying out, there is a little trapdoor in the pen that opens and closes to make sure the pen stays wet. But the Lamy 2000 has a hooded nib, I've left it out for 30 min uncapped by accident and it just wrote away the second I touched it to paper. Amazing or what???!!?!

Got my decimo a few days ago and there is a trapdoor that kinda makes this sound where when you pull something out thats airtight it will make a sound like plump. Thats the sound my decimo makes and when you open the pen (the place in the middle of the pen you unscrew to take the nib unit) there is a rubber o ring in there so its definetly airtight.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
