Signum Orione

Recommended Posts

Just received my Orione with steel nib and c/c fill. It's a great (GREAT) pen for $100.00. However, it does seem to be a little bit too wet and too broad for me. I'm wishing I would have ordered the fine. Here a pics of the blue version.

Great review, Vanessa! ("smudgy")

I don't know how I missed reading it 'til now...

Anyway, I ordered the green Orione with a Medium nib from Dave Mallinder at http://www.midwestpens.com (Midwest Pens), his brand-new webstore. You might have read about it on PT already, but he has a weekend special on until 7:00pm Sunday (today).

You can get a steel-nibbed Orione (choice of F or M nib) for just $90.00 USD including shipping (in the U.S.) International shipping extra (he'll split the cost). The pen comes with a 2-pen leather case, too!

:o :o

Dave's post is here:

Now, Dave is in Minnesota, so I don't know if the deal ends at 7:00pm Central Standard time or what, but act now if you are interested!! I've bought from him before (no affiliation--just a happy customer) and he is very honest and offers great service :)

Thanks Maja and hi all - thought I'd pop in and register since Maja kindly linked me here.

To clarify

Yep the sale was slated to end at 7pm today Central so about 75 mins from now. However because I screwed up a post at Rambling Snail I extended it for those folks by 24 hrs so since I'm only just surfacing here now it's only fair to give you guys the same extension, so all time zones get a fair shot.

So 7pm US Central time TOMORROW Monday 10/10 will end the chance to snag a steel nib Orione for $90 shipped CONUS (shared overseas).

Be sure to check out the used pens and other Signums if Oriones aren't for you!

Ryan, the more I look at your blue Orione, the more I want to get one. I've got a soft spot for blue resin pens. You ought to be ashamed of yourself for posting such tempting pics. :D

Apollo,

I have no shame:). In fact,

I've been envying your Lamy 2000 pics for the past week, so this is only fair. I love the understatement of that Lamy.

The blue Orione is certainly beautiful. The Orione is my favorite resin pen made today. I traded off the one pictured due to the nib being too broad, but I have a blue one with a fine nib in the mail from Midwest Pens [no affiliation] right now (waiting anxiously). If you're at all in the market, $90.00 shipped is an amazing deal for a pen of this quality. It's probably the most comfortable feeling pen I've owned yet. Now I just have to hope that Midwest Pens doesn't start discounting the piston/gold version or the Nova. I'm a sucker for Italian pens - especially ones that are actually reliable!

OH come on Ryan what makes you think I'd try to get you to buy more Signums ??

:D

In all honesty next sale is probably going to be Pythons - basically Novas with snakeskin caps. Very cool!

Hey, maybe a dumb question.....but....how do you pronounce Signum? My girlfriend is in Italy for the semester, but I haven't had the opportunity to ask her yet. I'm assuming with sig-num or sinyum - but I'm just not sure.

It's not really an Italian word per se but is a Latin word (it means a seal or mark - such as would be pressed into wax) and as such would be with a hard g as in sigg-num.

Hope that helps!

Anyone have any tarnishing issues with the Orione trim? I'm not too much a fan of the provided leather case as it doesn't have a divided interior, and I'm wondering if another non-lined leather case will cause the trim to tarnish. I seem to remember that it may be sterling silver plated. Any experience/guidance with this?

I think any leather case can accelerate tarnishing on gold or silver...Something to do with the tanning materials used? Someone please correct me if I am wrong....

That leather case does look nice, though, and I do rotate my pens in 2-pen cases quite often, so I am not too worried. Good to know, though!

Yep Maja is right - this is a common occurrence with leather and silver. Generally tarnish will happen most on silver that is not handled or used - the best way to avoid tarnish is to keep using the pen!

If you have lots of pens and rotate frequently (I'm as gulity as anyone!) then keeping ANY silver in ANY leather is best avoided unless you want to clean them a bit more than you'd otherwise have to. Not that that's a problem either of course - like many people on these boards I clean as often as I use it seems. Any silver will tarnish with nonuse regardless of what you keep it in - just a bit more quickly in contact with leather.

Worth mentioning of course is that tarnish on sterling or hallmark silver is no big deal either way. It rubs right off with a jeweler's cloth with no aggressive polish needed. Sometimes threads are best done with a toothbrush IMO but no biggie even then.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info, Dave! I don't really have a problem with occasionally wiping down the Signum, so It may find its way into some leather eventually.

Got a beautiful blue one with an incredibly smooth medium nib from DM! The depth of the blue colors in the resin is amazing!!! Great pen, great service! No affiliation blah blah blah.

I complained earlier about the Signum leather case not being fully divided. Well, I rolled up the nice velvet material that comes in the pen box, cut off a little excess and shoved it ibetween the pens in my case. You'd be surprised how well it works! Those pens will never bang together.

I'll have to try that Ryan; thanks for the tip!

I wonder if my green Signum Orione pen from Dave M. is waiting for me at the post office. I got a parcel notice while I was at work today... :)

Nope...it was another pen (a Stipula Duetto)...but I got the Orione on the 9th (two days ago). What a nice smooth writer! :o And is it just me, or is my medium nib a bit stubbish? (that's a good thing for me, by the way)

Thanks again, DaveM!!

I traded off the one pictured due to the nib being too broad, but I have a blue one with a fine nib in the mail from Midwest Pens [no affiliation] right now (waiting anxiously).

Hey folks

am really looking at the Orione, and am wondering a couple of things

1. Ryan mentioned having to trade the medium for a fine since it was too broad --- am trying to get a feel for the nib. How would any current owners of the Orione compare the fine or medium to a Pel medium nib? My Pel 200 is the only frame of reference so far, as I like its size.

2. Does anyone have any good pics of any of the other colors? The teal looks nice but it is not a color I would normally pick and would like to compare. The pics on the websites just don't give me a good sense of the look.

thx for any help you can offer !!
