An Old Soviet Passport

The passport gives the bearer the right to leave the USSR, but prevents her from going to Romania, Bulgaria, North America, and a couple of other places I can't make out. It also limits the time she can remain outside the borders of the USSR to one year.

The other places look like they could be Australia, Africa and South America and I can't make out the last one.

I was also drawn to the issue of her name on both sides. The Russian side has her patronymic "Borisovna" but the French side doesn't. I wonder why...

As for the color of the ink, I wonder if anyone with a bottle of Private Reserve Purple Haze or Cosmic Cobalt could compare those for similarity to the color in the photo.

I can't say I was aware that physical description could be the basis of criminal charges. The nose description is no longer funny.

Seek that which is true, beautiful, and good.

Every 60s-80s Waterman pen I have purchased from France was always filled with old dried Waterman Violet ink. he. They must of have used an enormous amount of that back in the day.

I just got a Watermina with the old C/F carts. The pen itself and the box of carts that came with it were, Waterman Violet. My Man 100 was filled with it too. Took days of soaking to get that out of there. heh.

I was thinking that the "nose" description especially was a holdover from the Czarist days when such descriptions on official documents contributed to the efficiency of pogroms.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

Also ... I hope she used that passport to get the hell out and as far away as possible, because she doesn't exactly look like the Bolshevik type.

That was one of my first thoughts as well!

No North America, so I guess she wasn't out looking for Moose and Squirrel!

I came across an article about old passports and found this Soviet Passport interesting. I love the cursive as well of the ink. Okay, I admit that I like any old paper with writing on it but this ink reminds me of Noodler's Violet Vote. I would very much like it if Nathan would/could once again produce VV. It was the perfect ink. If anyone knows of a good substitute, say some thing; I'm listening.

It reminds me of the old mimeograph color which was made with Gentian Violet.

You can see the article here: http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/defunct-country-passports

You'll find other fascinating stuff from countries that no longer exist such as Fiume and the German Empire.

Fiume (Rijeka) is my hometown. Nice reminder on a piece of familiar history, thank you Alexandra!

Ink reminds on Pelikan Violet.

I am entirely unfamiliar with Wahl-Eversharp inks but once gave away a bottle of JH Violette Pensee. I now have inky regret.

This is easily fixed by a bit of ink shopping. :bunny01:

Nothing wrong with shopping.

While you are at the Wahl-Eversharp site, check out the beautiful pens.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
