Parker Sonnet Review

Recommended Posts

Hello, everyone, this is my first review, so please be honest and tell me what you think.

Today we are reviewing the Parker Sonnet in the beautiful Dark Grey finish! I bought the pen on Amazon for 137$. I know it is crazy, but it is actually not a fake (got it confirmed.) . NOTE: SORRY FOR THE UPSIDE DOWN PHOTO, THAT WAS MY MISTAKE.

1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The pen came in a beautiful Parker cardboard box. Underneath is a secret compartment that reveals a manual and a cartridge. For some reason, my pen came with a converter inserted, so that was nice. 5/5

2. Appearance (A.K.A, The Beauty Pageant.)

The pen base is stainless steel with a lacquered design that looks professional and classy. The dark gray is designed to have a rectangle cross hatch design. The trims are a nice touch, adding Rhodium-plated trims to complete the pen finishes. 5/5

3. How does the pen write?/Nib

I bought my Sonnet with a fine nib. I'm proud to say that this pen has the best nib of my collection so far. It writes so smooth and has almost no feedback. I guess I lucked out because others were complaining about how it skipped. They were kind of right, however. The pen is a hard starter sometimes and can skip in some upper strokes. The pen came with a Parker UK gold nib unit that comes in the newer models. Can someone explain this? (You can see what I mean in the Parker UK site.) 4/5

Excuse me for my terrible handwriting, but I have a bruise on my thumb that really hurts.

4. Weight/Aesthetics

This is where the pen especially shines. The parker Sonnet has a really balanced body. I was impressed with how it felt in my hand. The shape, the design, just all of it is beautiful. :notworthy1:

The weight of this pen is, according to bestfountainpen.com (I don't have a scale) .90 grams.

As for the length, it is about 5 inches long and 1/4 of an inch thick.

I feel that the pen is just that tad too small for me, however

4/5

So is it a good pen?

18/20

GRADE: 90% (A)

Yes. It is beautiful, it writes well, and it is aesthetically awesome. The pen is actually quite durable, so it is good for a traveling writer or someone who needs a nice looking pen on the go. The Dark Grey seems like a good choice for those at work who want to look professional when writing. All in all, the Sonnet is just great. For those of us who want to buy it for cheap, here is the link, make sure to buy it from Amazon directly. :puddle:

Great review! I have that steel nib in an older black with gold accents Sonnet, it's a dream to write with, never fails to start, never skips, I couldn't believe it. It was my best nib, better than Pelikan m400 or Waterman man 100, much more expensive pens... Until I got a Sailor Pro Gear. Honestly it makes me want to write more.

I would suggest flushing the ink out then rinsing with water until it's clear, a bulb syringe makes this very easy. Then fill and flush with ink several times.

If the pen skips and has hard starts, having the nib adjusted might help. If it is just drying out and hard starts, I wonder if a nibmeister might be needed to adjust the nib. I think the skipping does add a symptom that is more than just typical Sonnet issues. So, a competent expert adjusting the nib might be the cure.

  • 1 year later...

A Parker Sonnet is my next purchase. Just need to decide on the Fine or Medium nib, although I've heard that they are nearly identical in the line width they lay down.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
