Monteverde Ink Reviews

I have noticed that there are very, very few "reviews" of Monteverde inks on the "review" section of FPN. Why would that be true? They make a fairly large number of inks. C. S.

No idea.

Don't assume anything though.

Their Blue Black (at least the old version. i've yet tot try the new one) and their black are both "solid" inks and a joy to use.

Their new line is pretty cool, and it could be that the new line is just too new to have generated reviews. Red velvet is terrific. The old line of inks, I don't know why there were so few reviews.

I only have the old ones and they are/were... well, not at all that bad but then again, nothing special. They only "had" 10 standard/basic colors just like Waterman or 4001 or Skrip or Visconti etc. They didn't have anything to rave about like very subtle mixes in today's ROs or Iroshis or Sailors since 10 yeas ago. Or anything to avoid in regard to dubious physical properties.

I'll admit that the only Monteverde ink I've really tried is a sort of grayish blue/blue black that was swag from DCSS several years ago. It wasn't bad, but a little unsaturated for my taste. However, I did like it well enough to contact Monteverde about what it was called, and was told that while it was an LE ink for the show I could order a bottle of it directly from them. For, IIRC, $15 US plus nearly $12 MORE for s/h.

I passed.... For that kind of money, I can get a bottle of Akkerman #9 from Vanness, which is a really nice grey-blue. It's more ink, and of course the bonus is the awesome Akkerman bottle; plus, I'd be ordering other ink samples or bottles, and not, probably, get charged much more for shipping.

That being said, some of the new Monteverde colors do look interesting.

Napa Burgundy is pretty nice. I picked up a sample at Goulet recently. I posted a comparison with some other reds...

I've got a few of these. I don't do reviews but can post a line of writing of each, if anyone's interested.

Yes, that would be great! I'm really interested in their new blue-black.

Here are some quick writing samples of the new MV inks I have. Top line of each colour is made with a generic glass nib dip pen, which makes a medium- broad line. Bottom line is a Visconti glass nib pen, with a very fine line. The paper is a Silvine Memo book (original style). White, FP friendly c.80gsm

antichresis - I don't have the new blue-black yet.

Thanks, migo! I got a sample of Red Velvet on our recommendation, but have yet to try it. This reminds me that I should put it in a pen soon.

I'm on my second fill of the new Blue-Black in an EF Waterman L'Etalon. It's so dark you'd mistake it for a black unless it got smeared. It's an exceedingly well behaved ink. Starts up right away, goes on smoothly, and dries quickly. Feathers a little on really bad copy paper, but less than most inks would. I think it's a winner, and the price is reasonable.

Will you be able to post some photos? Have you tried Diamine Eclipse (an ink I like but was too black too often to merit a bottle)?

Thanks Migo.

When you get back to Australia, do you feel like putting these out in the sun and show us some fade results? (I know it isn't your usual thing).

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'll give it a go :-) I'll write up a few lines of each & stick them in the suitcase. That big old hole in the ozone layer over Aus, and the resultant maxi strength UV rays, will definitely put them to the test! What is your recommended methodology Amber?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
