3D Printer - Pen Pillow

My wonderful wife bought me a 3D printer for Christmas so I've been busy the past few weeks learning about creating 3d models and things of that nature. Of course my first few creations have been pen related. I made a pen stand (sort of a learning project - not so great) and today designed a pen pillow. The pen pillow was fairly easy to design (using google Sketchup - it's okay I guess - fairly easy to learn) and after printing three different sizes I finalized the project:

It's not perfect (the printer always has some minor imperfections) but came out pretty nice! Works great with all my pens:

Lot's of fun!

Thanks! The Pelikan was a very willing and able model :)

For the sake of science - below are the three prototypes - I actually liked the small one but my wife thought it needed to be a bit bigger.

Pens for sure - I hadn't thought about ink bottles however I may try to design some sort of an ink bottle stand that can be used to help protect a bottle when it's uncapped and susceptible to spilling. I wonder what that would look like...

Nice project Mike! Great idea.

About the bottle stand... have you seen the ring stands they use to keep gas bottles from tipping over? You know, the bottles of helium at the flower shop or oxy/acetylene at the garage? Would something like that work? And 3D printed you could make square ones for those pesky Noodlers bottles.

Pretty neat.
I have a question about the plastic that you used for the other prototypes -- is that plastic reusable (i.e., can you stick it back in the printer again)?

My husband has been interested in 3D printers for a while, and I think he wants to get one at some point.

Thanks - I like the ring stand idea as a starting place.

No - unfortunately you can't reuse any of the plastic. The printer needs filament in thin strands (think spaghetti) that is fed into it off a spool.
