Pilot Custom 78G BB

There are already two fine reviews of the Pilot 78G so I will mostly just post some photos. I bought the black & gold version again, just like my 78G B pen.

The double broad version requires a bit more care in writing position since the nib width is so broad. You have to make sure the entire surface of both tines touch the paper in order to make consistent calligraphy marks. Of course this pen is much smoother than any of my italic pens - I have a new version Sheaffer Viewpoint and an Osmiroid set.

This BB nib really brings out the shading in my Noodler's Apache Sunset ink. That's enough to justify my owning it although I keep planning to learn Italic.

While I have yet to ink the Pilot 78Gbb I purchased recently, I do have PR Orange Crush in a 78Gb. In fact I like it so well, I haven't loaded it with anything else since I bought it. The rich orange color flowing from the wide gold nib and black barrel looks absolutely perfect to me. But one of these days I'm going to acquire a sample of Apache Sunset. Just look at that shading!

Artaddict,

That is a lovely pen/ink combination! And you really did get great shading and line variation. Thanks for this review!

Lisa (considering a 78G also)

Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.

Thanks for your comments, Margana and Lisa. I have Luxury Blue(not much shading) in my 78G B, and Apache Sunset in the BB.

Hello, nice pen. I thought you didn't like black. Are the gold bands painted or metal?

Chihiro- How did you know my name was Chihiro?

Haku- I have known you since you were very small.

Hi Domino,

I do like black. Hmmm... did I say something in some thread?

The gold bands are painted.

I was actually thinking of selling some of my non-black pens...

I did change my mind about the Marble design of the Phileas - I got the Blue Marble and I like the looks of the pen very much. I think it looks much better in person.

o.O look at the line variation on that thing!! Where did you order from?

I got it from an ebay seller called ultracollections (something like that). I don't know if he has any left, I think he only had 3 available when I bought mine...

I have 78G Broad pens on back order. As soon as I get them I will let all the members know. I have had many of you ask me for these in broad. Not sure if I will get the double broad or not. I currently have Fine and Medium in stock at: www.isellpens.com .

I got my Pilot 78G B from Norman at HisNibs  - he is wonderful to deal with, a gentleman.

It's one of my favorite pens, easier to use than the BB, and will show the shading as well.

I've been on this forum for awhile now and I still don't know what is meant by shading. Could someone explain? Is it where part of your stroke looks darker than another?

Yup, the tonal variations of the ink on paper, some lighter/darker, more/less hue saturation.

I think so, yes. And with some ink/pen combinations you can see a subtle change in colour rather than just intensity, so that Apache can have some areas of red where the ink is especially concentrated.

Say, are those Bs and BBs on the Pilot 78G 'iridium' tipped, like custom stub nibs?

Or are they simply cut into chisel shape with no tipping, like Sheaffer Viewpoint and Parker Vector calligraphy pens?

The BB I have is just plain, no iridium tipping.

The Pilot 78s are tipped. It is very hard to see the tipping material however. It is just a very thin line of "something" -- no idea whether it is iridium or something else, but it is there on my B nib and I suspect on other widths as well.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
