I was in mood of sketching, and then remembered its the anniversary of release of "Nelson Mandella" from the prison year 1990, so decided to sketch him, hope you all will like it:

Extraordinary!!!

Nelson Mandella quotes:

"It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another."

"It always seems impossible, until it's done."

"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."

As rather frequently, an old thing of unknown make and age.

Long story short(ish), I spent my evening (night, really) fixing up a new flea market find; looks like a bog-standard unbranded 1950's piston filler, but it has a 14k Bock nib unit (which is the sole reason why grudgingly I paid 25 bucks for an untested, unbranded, used pen).

I fixed the leaky piston seal (first time I had to exchange one completely - nerve-wracking, but the operation seems to have been successful) and just inked it up for the first time, half-expecting a scratchy mess. But nope, not this time.

Ye gods, it writes beautifully. Almost too smooth, with a beautiful even, medium line and a fantastic ink flow - feels like a wet pen, looks like a wet pen, but actually doesn't put down a lot of ink, which means that everything is very controlled, still dries quickly and doesn't mess with the paper.

It's a shame the nib seems to small for the pen, the section is too short for me and the nib isn't an F nib - otherwise this would be THE pen for me.

I'll have to find a camera and take some pictures soon.

Striated in four shades of green, this Empire lever-fill pen writes with a wet, medium nib. It has black end caps and physical dimensions closely akin to a vintage Parker Duofold Senior. Of the many vintage lever-fill pens that I pick up for ten or twelve bucks, this is one is a find, way out of the norm.

The sac took on a lot of ink, as it has been writing much longer than expected. It is the only Empire in my collection.

The other pen in pocket is a lowly Parker 45 . For forty years, I don't leave home without it.

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

An old Schaeffer medium-nibbed something-or-other I bought back in high school for $4, pending delivery of a couple better pens to get back in a groove of using them.

Mr. Butterfingers got clumsy yesterday. I dropped my Montblanc 234 1/2 Luxury nib down on the table and bent the nib. Oh well. It's only money. Today I'm using my Montblanc 149.

@Northstar. Your sketch is incredible.

I'm using a blue Pelikan Pelikano I got for free when ordering a Lamy LX on Fountain Pen Day. I have a Pelikan converter and was going to use bottled ink, but used the cartridge it came with instead.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
