Hi,

Planning to a trip to Singapore next year. Which fountain pens and inks to get from there ? Which are the stores to pick them up from?

Thanks,

Dinuraj

I ply the bargain end of the spectrum and can recommend Mustafa Centre at 145 Syed Alwi Road Level 4 Old Building near Farrer Park MRT station.

You can get the Pilot "Tank" eyedropper, old-school Hero pens for about a dollar each, and Pelikan 4001 bottles for about US$3 (which, I think, is the cheapest in the world).

Locals actually prefer Fook Hing to Aesthetic Bay (I'm not from SG but that's what the Singapore Fountain Pen Lovers FB group members tell me). Fook Hing is located at the Bras Basah Shopping Complex.

Overjoyed.xyz also comes well-recommended by locals.

Last point: SFPL tells me that the prices for the more expensive pens (think: gold nibbed pens) is about the same in the West. It's more of a thing of either 1. wanting to get something as something to remember your visit by or 2. chancing upon a good deal and snapping it up. Enjoy SG!

Hero #232 Blue-Black is my Waterman Florida Blue.

Your Kilometrage May Vary (#ykmv), a Philippine blawg about ink and fountain pens.

Was up in SG earlier this year.

Mustafa is ok if you're accustomed to their style of 24hr eastern bazaar :) there is pen counter on lower floor, stationery dept on upper floor.

When I was there they had cleared out their 4001 bottles totally :( so I bought them from other stationery shops around the island.

Aesthetic Bay would suit you... if you were in the market for a brandnew RollsRoyce at full retail price. :P haha but as they say "it doesn't cost anything to windowshop" so do pop past when you're in a Orchard Rd for retail therapy.

Fook Hing is good for less fancy gear, good range of Japanese inks. Bras Basah Complex is an old style shopping mall (ahh brings back childhood memories) and there's a few other stationery shops in there... the oldskool dark & dingy type where you've gotta go excavating to find stuff, then bargain with the Aunty/uncle at the front door for what you've dug up. ;)

Kinokuniya main store has Pilots, Popular bookstore has Platinum especially Preppys... some had fancier models too when I was there.

Second to Fook Hing. You might want to skip the Aesthetic Bay unless you want $1000+ pen.

btw most "serious" SG FP collectors/owners would be mailordering from overseas, if that tells you anything

Occasionally you might score up to 20% Off, never seen more. Local shops cater to the ample tourist trade, why lose margin discounting for local buyers when hard-to-get stock just walks out the door at full price?
