Noodler’s is one of the companies that don’t need any introductions. Nathan Tardiff is a legend and his work is well known by fountain pen and ink afficionados. Not everyone is crazy about Noodler’s inks but I enjoy most of the ones I’ve tried so far.

 

 

Northstar Liberator was one of three Noodler's Inks from limited materials made for New England pen show - Commonwealth. The ink is 100% bulletproof and behaves pretty well - I appreciate the fact it doesn't feather. The color can be vibrant while used in broad and wet pens but the result is rather boring for my taste. Maybe if you collect Noodler's ink or need light water resistant blue this one will suit your needs / tastes. For me it's an ink I'll never use again.

I really enjoy this ink. It's in my Blue Edison Pearl with a fine nib and it behaves very well. It dries quickly and yet it doesn't feather. I wish it were a tad easier flowing but it's not too dry to enjoy. Oh, and I really like the color in my work notes; it contrasts very nicely with my other inks and yet is easy to read.

While I wouldn't go as far as PaganArcher and say this was just the color I was looking for, I do like what this looks like and am sorry it wasn't something I was able to get. It appears to be lighter and more water resistant than Liberty's Elysium (which I like a lot) without having the chalkiness of Upper Ganges Blue.

No. From the video about these inks Mr. Tardiff said they were made from materials that were no longer available.

I liked it. I also compared it to one of the newer blues... I'll look through the CRVs. I really like that it isn't chalky.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

It seems hard to believe in this that any materials are not available. I suppose they are not "readily" available. Too bad, I really love the color...

I just bought a bottle at Dromgoole's in Houston, TX. They had at least 5 other bottles.

It could be Mr. Tardiff is buying the last gallon of a supply or from a development sample. The dye industry I'm sure is always changing its product lines. Or the minimum purchase is 1000 gallons, so a little company like Noodler's can't really purchase or even need that quantity.

Due to it being a bit slow flowing, I asked Nathan if it was safe to mix with the standard Noodlers Blue. It is. Since I don't have that ink, I mixed it 1:1 with PRDCSSB and the results have been great. Similar hue (to my eye) but a bit richer and the flow has definitely improved; no issues with leave my pen uncapped. Obviously, it still has a more than adequate level of bulletproofness (it can handle a 38 but maybe not a 357). As another plus, it'll make this limited ink last longer.
