Hello From Berkeley, California Usa

Hello to all here at The Fountain Pen Network!

My name is Oona, and I have lived my entire 35 years here in hometown Berkeley, California.

Here's some about me: I have always had a love of handwriting. I remember learning cursive in third grade and never looking back to plain print for my 'usual' way of writing again; and, I also, have (and continue) to be creative with letters in other ways, from making the letters look like animals( such as snakes, bird neck and head, etc.) to the present, as i begin learning and seriously practicing Western Calligraphy, plus developing a little skill in writing from right to left in Farsi ( a language I may be inspired to learn since my initial attempts at the written form were so enjoyable!)

I am left-handed - and a happy and proud left-hander at that! I will also share another school memory I have from first grade regarding my handedness: my teacher, when coming round to us students to check on our written work in class, would try switching my pencil from my left to my right hand --and I immediately switched it back!

I have a love of the words ( and meanings therein) of the one language I am fluent in: English. So, it is a wonderful combination to love lettering arts as well as the words I can make by stringing those letters along in order.

I was gifted my very first fountain pen, a Waterman, upon my sixteenth birthday. I went along with my mother to ( the now long gone) Amsterdam Art Store in my West Berkeley neighborhood to help select the pen. to this day, it is my most beloved pen -- so special to me -- although I now have about ten fountain pens, plus a variety of dip pens, from the quill pens I've made from Macaw Parrot feathers and a Peacock tail feather, to my couple all glass dip pens in the Venetian Renaissance Style, and many metal nibs and holders, including calligraphy nibs and an oblique holder I seem to be able to use fine as a leftie.

I am artistically creative and will try almost any medium ( watercolor and colored pencil, nature drawings in pen and ink or pencil, plus crafts: including woodblock printing, knitting, inkle loom weaving, and pine needle basketry) but I believe my niche, the area for me to be most focused on, is lettering arts/calligraphy and creating my own style within that realm -- maybe even a couple different unique styles of my own.

I am happy to be here on the Fountain Pen Network! I look forward to getting more connected, making more posts and asking questions, and all else the network offers.

Best,

Oona Edelen

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user in San Diego. I'm sure you will enjoy your time here Oona. How wonderful that you have the pen that you and your mother picked out together.

Welcome !

In your joy of writing, I hope you will, someday, share some of your penmanship, using the "glass dip pen".

Oona- also check out the sub-forum for Clubs/Meetings. You will find notices for the Pen Posse meetings that happen in the greater San Francisco area. I think they meet sometimes in Millbrae. Is it anyplace near where you are at in Berkeley?

Oona and @fjoly79

You are both welcome to come to the San Francisco Pen Posse.

We usually meet in Millbrae, within short walking distance of the Millbrae BART station.

Keep an eye on the Clubs section for announcements.

Usually the announcements will have an interesting name.

The next SF Pen Posse will be on Sun Jun 18, but at a restaurant a bit farther from BART.

We will likely have another meet the week after or 2 weeks after.

And book your calendars for the SF Pen Show at the end of August in Redwood City.

In addition to the Pen Posse, there is the Pan Pacific Pen Club. The PPPC meets quarterly. The next meeting is Saturday July 29th in the North Berkeley Library. 12pm-3pm

The Pen Posse is very active and meets almost weekly (we skip a week here or there). Most meetings are near BART.

Welcome aboard Oona, from Charleston, SC. There was a new member here a few weeks ago who showed examples of her Arabic Calligraphy in her introduction, which were quite beautiful and most interesting. It may be something you are already familiar with, but if not, you might search for it in the forums. Have fun.

Mike
