Private Reserve Black Cherry

Fountain Pen Mike

Recommended Posts

Hi, guys and gals! Back with an ink review.
This time we are reviewing Private Reserve Black Cherry.

Pen is a Sheaffer Touchdown, medium nib. Paper is Tomoe River.

Ink is in my opinion a nice dark, almost maroon red. Hints of brown edging towards black.
This ink flows very smoothly, and has a nice, silky feel under the nib as I write with it. Does not hurt that the nib on the Touchdown used is a quite smooth one as well.
So far as I know, this is not a waterproof ink, but taking a wet piece of tissue and smearing the paper shows that it retains it's legibility when wet.
Speaking of wetness, it is in my opinion on the wet side, taking 20-25 seconds to dry on this paper, from this pen. All said, i like this ink very well.
This was one of several samples PIFed to me early on on one of the Fountain Pen boards . I will be reviewing as many of these as I can, as long as there is sufficient amount of ink in the sample to use the ink for a few days and still be able to do a review of it at the end of things. Some are bigger than others, but it is a wonderful thing to be able to try so many different ones.
I intend choosing a few of the inks in these samples that I think are above average, for me. This ink is a contender in that regard.
If you like darker, reddish inks, I think this one is a winner.
Thanks for reading, Very much appreciated.

I also have a pen playlist on my Youtube channel. Stop by if you're interested.

I like black cherry, but it does indeed take a long time to dry!

I'm a big fan of Black Cherry. Personally, I think of it as a brown that leans toward red. I've found it slow to dry, but as a color it has strong presence but still feels conservative enough for formal or professional use.

PAKMAN, arrScott, thanks for reading and replying.

arrScott, I agree. A very strong presence, but I would not be hesitant to use this ink in a professional setting. IMO, it has a ton of character.

Black Cherry was the first ink I ever bought. I still love it. So beautiful.

Thanks for the review.

Black Cherry was the first Private Reserve ink I purchased. Use it in my TWSBI Vac 700 with a medium nib. I agree it dries slowly but looks great on the page.

It looks similar to Diamine Oxblood.

Seek that which is true, beautiful, and good.

I had bad experience with this ink - I know that in the past there were some differences between PR inks batches and maybe I was just unlucky. Anyway Black Cherry I tried was extremely dry and clogged every pen I've filled with it.

That is not good.

Seek that which is true, beautiful, and good.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
