In A P51 Set, What Percent Of The Value Is The Pencil?

In a Parker 51 pen and pencil set, what percent of the value, approximately, is the pencil? Specifically I was thinking of the value of a plum 51 pen and pencil set. I am wondering if the pen's salability is reduced without the pencil.

IMO very little. 10% +/- 5%

Pencils and sets seem very out of favor right now. Other than cases where someone wants to have a full set for pure collectability purposes, I don't see buyers putting much stock (therefore dollars) in the matching pencil.

I believe that it varies based upon the other attributes of the set, such as color, and the cap on the pen and the corresponding top of the pen. Common pens that are primarily valued based on their writing use would have the low value as suggested above, but rare cap patterns and colors would not only increase the value of the pen, but that of the value of the pencil within the set as the set is being valued based on rarity. Throw in the correct box, and the set value increases more, and if they are all near mint, well, you are in a different price range completely.

Thanks for the information. Not much more for common sets.

For 51 pencils it is about the cap. There are a few pencils worth more than most pens but only a few.

I stumbled upon a couple of those Vac 51 pencils years ago, when I wanted a nice pencil to do crosswords.

Not a lot, so Greg's answer may apply. I often have people ask if they can buy a pen without the pencil. The answer is yes, but the price won't change.

I conclude that the plum pencil is worth as little as the other pencils, there being little demand for it.

No, I really want to know.

no Plum 51Ball Point (Jotter) should exist. Plum was gone by 1950, Jotters appear in 1954.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought it would be worth so much. Thanks for the information.

That´s funny, if you try to sell a set the pencil is worth nothing, but if want to buy one, I don´t see anybody giving them away

I used to buy the occasional 51 pencil off of ebay for $10 or less. You are right, nobody is giving them away today. A hundred dollars for a plum pencil, though, seems about two to three times what I might have hoped it to be worth.

They are pretty good pencils. You can make your own erasers from slab erasers, coring them out. The lead mechanism, especially on the cap actuated aero pencils still works well on all of mine. The plum pencil and my others are still good for crossword puzzles.
