Waterman Hémisphère - Fine/medium/broad?

Hello everyone,

I've just ordered a Waterman Hémisphère. I already have one with a F nib (which lays a relatively thick line). I wanted to try a medium or broad to avoid having two very similar pens, but the seller didn't have them in stock. I decided to buy the pen with a fine nib and send it to Waterman to have the nib changed to medium or broad. Now I start wondering if it is worth the hassle, as the minicomparison I've found shows very little difference in line width between these three nibs. Could anyone post a written comparison of Fine and Medium and/or Broad? I'd be very thankful.

Have a good day!

I'm thinking about buying this pen. Could you please let me know what is the length of the section and the diameter of the section?

Thanks!

Best,

Jozsef K.

Hello Jozsef,

I can't really help you with the diameter since I don't have somewhat professionall devices to measure it. You might find further information on this forum.
But I can tell the section is pretty accurately 3cm long. On this picture it looks like 3,1cm but it's actually closer to three centimetre.

The section is quite narrow. Much narrower than for example a Lamy Safari's section. The Goulet Pen Company offers a online-tool which they call Pen Plaza. You can select pens you want to compare. I'm sure you will find a pen you own to be able to compare it to the Hemisphere.

Kind regards,

On the data provided I have scaled a catalogue, where the pen is almost actual size anyway, and conclude the section diameter to be some 8 to 9mm close to the nib, 10mm at its maximum, moving up to 11mm on the barrel entrance.

Hello Jozsef,

I see I'm a bit late ;) I believe that Force and Caeruleum have satisfied your curiosity.

I've just noticed you quoted my post concerning the hand fatigue problems that I experience when I use my Hemisphere for a long time. This is very personal. There are some people who adore writing with thin pens; I prefer wider sections. I have two Hemispheres, though, and I really love them. They are great when I need to jot down something, write a few equations or prepare a lecture. I wouldn't write a novel with a Hemisphere, but it doesn't make it a bad pen.

May I ask whether you use other pens by Waterman if you want one with a wider grip? And if you do so, which pens can you recommend?

I do. My favourite EDC pen is Waterman Carene. I have three of them and they are my 'long distance' pens. I like Sheaffers with inlaid nibs, like Targa (the regular version) and Imperial. Taranis is quite comfortable, as well.

I have also one Waterman Perspective. This is a sharp looking pen with a wide section (but it has steps). I find it more comfortable than the Hemisphere.

I'll send you a PM with a comparison photo (Jinhao 159, Perspective, Hemisphere, Carene, Targa, Imperial - Taranis is on holidays)

Thank you everyone for reply! It is very helpful. Especially the pen plaza. They don't have all pens there but it's still useful.

Best,

Jozsef K.
