Right Ink For A New Lawyer

AAAndrew

Recommended Posts

I've worked as a lawyer for the last six years. I have used many types of pens and inks and have not had a single negative remark about any of them. If a lawyer is being judged on their pen there is bigger issues at play. My Bar Mistress told me many years ago that my fountain pen appreciation to her signaled a person who would take care in her notes and preparation.

I think it's a great gesture Andrew, two nice pen picks also. For serious endeavours I use Noodlers Luxury Blue, Sailor Kiwa Guro and Sei Boku, along with Diamine Red Dragon. I always have an arsenal of pens and inks on me however, even Kelly Green! :)

For a black, I'm really liking Chesterfield Antique Raven. For a red, Diamine Red Dragon is the one I use for editing my novel draft. Noodler's Fox is my favorite red, but it doesn't exactly play well with most papers.

Pardon me.

/*Stepping on the soap box*/

My father, 80 years and still kicking, told me of one of his bosses. Many years ago, he was telling my father that if he was applying for a job with him,he would not hire him because of his beard.

If you would not hire someone based on their choice of writing instruments, especially any fountain pen vs some ballpoint, then the problem is not with the person being hired but the person doing the hiring.

Not hiring someone because of a beard or their choice of writing instruments shows a prejudice. Would you want to work for someone or hire someone that has that kind of prejudice? As for beards, did he maybe think that their could have been a religious reason?

I will say no more.

About a year ago, I bought a fountain pen for an attorney. I chose a vintage Parker 45 in gray with a gold nib. As for inks, I was told that blue is the only color permitted for certain types of documents in his state. He tried some samples and chose Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-kai.

Strip red it is, and I'll give him the blue black I bought him anyway. Maybe he'll learn to like it and branch out.

Thanks for all your great suggestions!

Which Blue/Black did you get him? At least that is not distinctly Blue and does have the advantage that a black and white copy is obviously a copy.

Sheaffer Skrip Red is a decent, but somewhat boring, red, so probably a good choice for him.

A pair of TWSBIs make a lovely and thoughtful set of workhorses for someone on their way to becoming a young professional.

Might be time to start saving for the Mont Blanc when he makes partner.

Of course if a relative of mine made partner, it would be they who needed to buy me a nice pen, I fear. Lol.

Iroshizuku Shin-kai was mentioned. Terrific blue/black ink with subtle gravitas.

Or, how about the recently reviewed:

amberlea--I am so happy you had a "Perry Mason moment". You deserved it.

I would not have guessed you would recommend a blue, but I see that now. I would have thought Noodler's Black.

One could consider the psychological traits of inks... To me Vert Empire says power, in the know, part of the inner circle, but it might also look like the ink in US dollars; perle noire is so black anything written with it would be definitive, no further arguments required. Yama Guri looks very distinguished, you're not an up and comer, you're already there. I would probably send the gift along with a couple of one liners to beat back the ballpoint pen hordes.

I won't comment on rouge hematite, lawyers and blood...

  • 2 weeks later...

When using fountain pen in the office environment signing all those important documents which often can be on cheap photo copy grade paper the last thing you want is for the ink to bleed through the paper. Montblanc Permanent Blue is the most well behaved ink I've yet come across for being bleed through proof even with wet medium and broad nibs on the most non fountain pen friendly paper. And of course the fact it is permanent, waterproof and archival is a bonus.

Andrew, not sTrip red .... Skrip red, is however, wonderful! I enjoyed my recent sample.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I might suggest Miruai, especially with a fine nib; suitably dark, looks black at first glance but surprising depth to it - just something more there.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

But Strip Red is more "exciting!" But maybe not before he passes the bar. Skrip red it is.

Yes, I was surprised by how just much I did like the Miruai. It was almost immediately up there with Twilight in my top 5.

If he's a plaintiff attorney, I recommend "Heart of Darkness." If he's a tax attorney, any of the Eel inks would do.

Since he is a new FP user. I would keep it simple. I would recommend a pen that is easy to use with an ink from the same brand. How about Cross ATX with Cross Blue or Black ink? Parker Urban with corresponding ink?

I think of my FPs as my children.
