Pelikan 400 Sb-Nib

JPM-10

Recommended Posts

Since one week I am the proud owner of a few vintage Pelikan pens. One of these pens is 1950/1951 made 400 with SB nib.

The cap band goes without inscription and on the bottom of the barrel Gunther Wagner is imprinted.

On the turning knob of the pen it reads :SB nib installed. The nib itself looks extremely worn out and is either worn out

by the Original owner of the pen (my granddad), or the iridium tip of the nib is gone as a result of an accident of or something like that.

Nevertheless, the pen writes super with this funny nib. I installed it also on my new M400 pen and it fitted without any problem.

The pen itself was completely useless due to old ink inside the barrel. It took me two days of soaking and cleaning to get it going again.

The only problem right now is a small leakage after some days. The ink finds its way out of the pen via the backside after some time.

I think this can be repaired quite easy.

Nevertheless: Super pen and superb quality even after more than 60 years.

Congrats on coming into some great pens with a nice history. It sounds like the piston seal has worn out and will need to be replaced. You should seek out a professional to do this but, as you said, it can be repaired with relative ease.

As far as your nib, SB (Scheiben Breit) means disk top broad. It was a relatively scarce disk-top series of nibs found on early Pelikans, usually the script nibs. It is characterized by an angled nib that is flat on the end. Known to write smoothly and lay down a significant amount of ink. Used for lettering and producing round end lines.

This is what it kind of looks like... Hard to tell for sure from the pics (viewed on my cell phone) but I'd be concerned of some wear/damage to the tipping.

From the looks of things, the tipping on the nib is gone. Below pictures are what the nib is supposed to look like.

They aren't overly common. You'd need a lot of patience and scouring of the web over time. I've only seen a couple come up here and there. Perhaps a very talented nib meister could retip the nib you have and shape it like the SB based on available photos?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
