While I find Op's complaint frivolous, it'seems worth noting that Native American groups have been complaining that the Redskins are offensive for quite some time now.

That is a valid complaint, as it is race-based in origin, and the native American population was severely wronged, stolen from, and mass murdered by our ancestors.

 

Think about it. We invaded, stole their land, murdered their people, desecrate their traditions and beliefs and then we name our sports teams after offensive caricatures of them. Even without the history, imagine naming a football team the Yellowskins, with a bright yellow man's face with slanted eyes and bucked teeth? How about the Blackskins? We can give the mascot a huge afro and big lips.

 

I honestly can't believe these sports teams still exist.

 

That said, the OP is doesn't have a leg to stand on, as the term is not based in race, nor does it mock or criticize any particular sect of people.

There is plenty of racism in the US/world to call attention to but the word sumgai is not even remotely part of it
