Who Is The Fountain Pen Superhero?

Captain America, Iron Man, the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Falcon, Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Ant-Man. This weekend they led Captain America: Civil War to $181.8 million in revenue, the fifth-largest opening in movie history. Though Montblanc tapped actor Hugh Jackman as celebrity ambassador in an amusing video, his character, Wolverine, does not appear in Captain America. This evokes an epic question in the fountain pen universe. Who is the Fountain Pen Superhero?

Is it Ink-Woman? Pen-Man? Mr. Tines? The Nibster? What is their back story? Were they injected with ink as an infant in an evil government plot at the hospital? Do they have lots of tattoos? What is their superpower? Do they use needlepoint nibs as weapons? Could they defeat the Shoveler, the Blue Raja, Mr. Furious, Invisible Boy, the Bowler, and the Spleen from Mystery Men? We can only hope.

Of the list Captain America, Iron Man, the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Falcon, Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Ant-Man the only one I had ever heard of is Spider-Man and that just always seemed silly. And you are joking about a superhero called Ant-Man aren't you?

Jar,

Unfortunately, I am not joking about Ant-Man, who has an entire back-story and movie, seriously. Teenage daughters in the house make this universe impossible to ignore. Apparently Montegrappa thinks it's big enough universe to make pens from, which seems a bit silly, but maybe it will attract younger consumers. Montegrappa only deals with the DC Comics universe, by the way, which exists separately from the Marvel universe. Attached below is a Montegrappa Green Lantern pen.

I suspect, Jar, that your Fountain Pen Superhero would be French, carry an ST Dupont pen in the jacket pocket of an impeccably tailored suit, and slay enemies with elegant wit. They would not know what hit them.

Sounds like Homme de Fer, non?

Amazing. I really am out of touch. And the Montegrappa SuperHero pens definite slipped under the radar.

Um, we *are* talking about a guy who spent nearly half of The Avengers movie wearing a Black Sabbath t-shirt, right....? Of course it was probably to see who in the audience caught the reference.

Which of course begs the question -- what FP would Stan Lee use? ;) (I did like the answer, BTW, which he gave some reader years ago in an issue of Spiderman, when the little twit whined "I got myself bitten by a radioactive spider and *I* didn't turn into a superhero...." Mr. L's response? "Oh, sorry, we forgot to mention that you ALSO have to be pure in heart...."

I know. Couldn’t resist the S.T. Dupont connection. :)

In that case, I give you ... Blue-Black Beetle
Origin story: accidentally stabbed self in thumb clicking the wrong end of a Pilot Capless.
Character: smooth, dry, kind of shady.

Powers: impervious to lasers and all known solvents, able to bond with cellulose at a molecular level, unparalleled memory and retention.

Weaknesses: tell-tale reddish sheen, glows in the dark, considered boring by friends and enemies alike, unable to fly (no feathers).

Catbert,

Hilarious! Ability to bore people as a superpower! ("Yes, well, that model is clearly from 1936 because that was the only year in which they were using two bands, except for a couple of months in late 1939, but in 1939 they were engraved, which is not the case here. Of course, there was a non-branded special edition created just for .... ")

I had not seen the homme de fer pen (nor, Ruth, the meta back story behind Downey's T-shirt.) Has ST Dupont staked out Marvel characters, and Montegrappa taken characters from DC Comics?

Superhero names from characters who grew up in coastal towns: Cuttlefish. The Squid.

If I had a super hero I fear it would be someone like Kim or the Elephant Child; super power: being insatiably curious.

If you want a superhero who uses a pen, see The Kingsmen. Not really a super hero, but then if Marvel counts Hawkeye and Black Widow, I'll nominate Colin Firth's character.

Well, I don't have a superpower (at least not AFAIK). I do have a couple of "stupid peer tricks", though.

One is that I'm slightly double jointed, so I used to be able to sit on the floor with my legs doing a sort of M shape (with my, um, posterior being the middle point); not so limber as I used to be, though (I used to completely gross out the other girls in my gym class in high school, but I thought it was way more comfortable than sitting cross-legged).

The other is that sometimes (on occasion) have this unerring sense of finding unbelievable good deals on pens in the wild before I walk into a place.

Hey, maybe I DO have a superpower after all....

Here I thought the thread was going to be about nibmeisters or pen repair magicians. Come on, I don't think anyone on this board would not consider either Richard Binder or Ron Zorn to be superheroes.

Binder's fedora is distinctive, I will admit.

Perhaps confounding their pursuers by squirting Heart of Darkness?

Insatiable curiosity got me to my current hoard. Not sure if it's a power or an affliction. :)

And not just any pen - a custom Conway Stewart.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
