Rhodia and Clairefontaine used to be two separate companies but C bought out R in 1997. R is still produced and sold today but by C. R remains usually (in general) somewhat rougher (i.e. with a bit more more texture or tooth) than C. Put in other terms, C is smoother. It also depends on the type or model of each paper brand name. Especially the weight e.g. in g/m2 and the paper color. Check their sites, the forum on these aspects, the advanced search option, and your friendly neighborhood store.

Mine arrived today, yay! Parker Frontier fine nib got the honor of trying it out. Initial impressions:

 

Black n' Red spiral - What a gorgeous color! Lovely shading from the wet, medium-ish line of the Frontier. Didn't see any sheen at first but when I checked again after a couple of mins, there it was. The sheen appears as the ink dries; it dries pretty fast so you can actually watch it happen. No feathering, spread or show-through.

 

Strathmore sketch - Color still lovely with moderate amount of shading; no sheen. Slight show-through and ever so slight fuzziness to the edge of line but not really bad (more to surface grain than absorption, I think).

 

memo pad - Ugly, unless you like a dark, flat, uninteresting purple color. Spread, fuzzy line, moderate show-through.

 

Will see how it looks on the copy paper at work tonight. Looks ok on the copy paper, nice even color, very little shading, some show-through; better than the memo not as good as the sketch.

Yes, I've tried Diamine Imperial Purple - it's rather good but Dark Lilac looks much better to me :)

Up to now, Diamine Imperial Purple has been my favorite purple. Just snagged two bottles of Lamy Dark Lilac. Figured, if I like it I'm set, if not, maybe someone who really likes it but wasn't able to get one might profit by my extra bottle. Need to wait for arrival to try it out. Got a nice new TWSBI ECO 1.1 mm stub to try it out on, coming with the ink.

I eventually got it to sheen on Tomoe. It does need to be very, very wet though. I'm using carts and wonder does that effect it?

Could be... I'm using bottled ink. I got sheen on Oxford Optik without even trying...

Vis, how would say this compares to KWZI Gummiberry?

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Hmmm, I don't have Gumiberry at the moment so hard to say.

 

It can give you some idea because the paper used in both reviews is the same, sadly not the pen. Lamy Al-Star used in Dark Lilac review is much drier than Kaweco Sport used to review Gumiberry (ALso Al-Star was used with medium nib, Kawecio with broad). Therefore it's not really accurate comparison.

Thanks for the comparison samples.

 

I was thinking Gummiberry might be a good non-sheening alternative to Lilac, color-wise.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Hmm... I liked Gummiberry and acquired it...... and I just picked up Dark Lilac. I didn't expect them to be so close. I will see if I can CRV with someone.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

got some last month day before we flew out; finally got back today & had a play tonite, love it!!

 

colourwise I still like Copper Orange but Dark Lilac has much more practical usage

That certainly beats the $50+ they're charging on ebay. Thank you for the tip - I just ordered myself a bottle!

Unfortunately that well has run dry also. I just got an email that my second bottle was cancelled - sold out and no longer available.

Nice one. I'm not a purple person, and I'm not usually a fan of super saturated inks, but I can see the draw in this one.

 

And now I'm lusting after that KWZI iron gall. Off to find your review of that one!

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
