Where Do You Typically Find Parts?

Hey there everybody! I need to pick up a few of replacement parts:

An aerometric converter for a 75 and a vacumatic filler and sac for a 51.

What are your suggestions of where I should go.

Please and thank you!

I'm guessing you got several PMs. If not, buy lots of pens. I mean LOTS of pens. Some will be parts pens from which you can scavenge useable items for the rest of the pens.

Or, if you don't want to have your own parts stash, try (in no particular order):

http://www.pentooling.com/

http://www.ink-pen.com/

Or advertise in FPN classifieds.

I have gotten some parts from Ariel Kullock and the penpartsstore on ebay. Basically the same source, more or less. A bit pricey sometimes.

Many of the established pen mechanics will have large cashes of parts. But they will typically only sell parts in conjunction with a repair.

The next best place to buy pen parts is a Pen Show or gamble on pen on eBay.

There are some sellers of specialized parts. For example a Parker 51 or a Parker 75 have known sources of parts.

Selling parts is can be a lot of work and often a lot of trouble. Parts often do not work, they don't fit, the color is wrong, it is not perfect, etc. many parts sources just avoid the hassle. Not to mention, parts can be expensive--if you yank a part from a pen to sell it, you now need to find a use for the remainder of the parts. Keep in mind that most of the time everyone is looking for the same part for a given pen model.

For example 51 jewels are always in demand. So much so that reproductions are available.

In your case a converter for a 75 is a generic part, almost any Parker converter will work. Some will be more period correct but that is a minor concern if you want to make the pen work.

A Vacumatic filler is less generic--three sizes and at depending on how you count, three styles. Demand varies for each type filler. An OS lockdown filler is much harder to find than a more common plastic filler for a 51. Fillers have become enough of a demand item that reproduction and replacement fillers are now available. If I were looking for a Vac-filler I would find a pen that had other damage (missing cap, bent nib, cracked barrel, etc) and harvest the filler. A broken pen at a show or often on eBay will sell for less than a filler would sell for from a parts dealer. For reference I seem to recall an eBay listing for fillers recently that was ~35 US plus some postage. In most instances your filler could be rebuilt at a lower cost by sending the pen to someone that does Vacumatic filler rebuilds. You do not indicate what is wrong with the filler unit but cups and springs are available as reproduction parts and all the other bits are sitting around having been harvested from damaged fillers.

Hope this helps

I wish I was able to sell on ebay. I have amassed large number of pen parts especially Parker parts including all types of Parker squeeze converters, caps, nibs and bodies.

Parker squeeze converters/sac guards from just one container. Have more than 10 little jars/containers full of these. Lol.

Yeah, I plan on buying pens and parts when I go to the supershow but I really want to get my pens repaired now as well so I thought I would buy some now and get the ones at the show for later repairs. Thank you for the links

Yeah I have a couple of items from an ebay store marked for at least the converter, but wanted to shop around too cause they felt pricey.

Yeah, I plan on getting some parts at the supershow but am also not very patient. The filler is for my beloved 51 and I haven't written with it in way too long.

You're right. I might not need a filler. LOL! You mentioning that I never said what was wrong led me to remember the issue (which occurred months ago). When I went to pump my pen, the filler plunger would come back up with ink. So I just took it apart completely and I do not know if this particular model is supposed to have a diaphram, but the collector came off without a problem and there was nothing in the barrel.

The remains of the diaphragm are likely stuck to the inside of the barrel. Make sure to remove the sac remains from the ferrule. Your filler looks serviceable provided the blind cap threads are not damaged.

I kept looking in the barrel and didn't see anything. Lightly scraped with a dental scraper and it just felt like plastic. Need to shine a better light into it and investigate when I have more time.

This has been fruitful :)
