Quick Review: Sheaffer Skrip Blue-Black

Hey y'all! This is my first review, so be kind. I just wanted to get it done quickly, and didn't feel like inking up anything else to compare. The photo was color balanced in lightroom to most effectively match the actual paper in ambient natural light.

This is a well behaved BB ink that has a nice vintage look. About a year ago I accidentaly mixed it with some Sheaffer violet and it transformed into a very beautiful blue-black.

Yes, IMO it is a "weak" blue-black inasmuch as it's neither a bluish black or a blackish blue (the original Made in U.S.A with the unequivocal well was one of the two). It's unfortunately rather a washed-out turquoise-grey, only to be superseded by Waterman's and Parker's blue-black. But this Skrip is very well behaved, just like those of the other two brands.

I tried this on a few other papers, and it is definitely well-behaved, albeit boring (to me).

 

I'm hoping to review an ink every week or two, so if there's anything I missed let me know. Bleedthrough is already on my list.

 

This ink, by the way, has no bleedthrough or ghosting on Rhodia.

To my eyes it looks a bit washed out, so much so that I wonder why it isn't called Steel Blue. It's something I see in my Lamy B-B too, and what makes me look out for something else.

I found that SSBlBk has an admirable performance profile, though rather boring appearance (mini-yawn).

 

When paired with an appropriate [wide] nib pen and coated paper things can get more interesting in a Blue-Black sort of way.

 

During my most recent home leave I ran SSBlBk from a Pelikan M400+M nib, and I was very satisfied: Let's just write. I recall that a bottle Pelikan Blue-Black created a fuss at not being chosen, but I see enough of that elsewhere.

 

When I have the time I like to add a whisper of an Indigo-leaning Blue, such as Diamine Denim, to enliven SSBlBk. (Posting samples of such remains on my bottomless To Do List.)

I've played with this ink today at work, and on cheap paper, it behaves exceptionally well. No feathering unless I somehow lay down a super wet line. It has a deeper blue color when it soaks in thick, and it's straight-laced enough for business use. I used it today in a hospital for some chart writing, and it definitely met or exceeded minimum standards.
