Cleaning And Lubricating Swan 3240? Brass Oxidised

SomersetSwan

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am a novice and have bought my first pen to restore, after much reading of invaluable advice from this and other sites.Thankyou.

I have a Swan 3240 pen and pencil set in a box. The pen with a brass cap thread between the section and the barrel. The barrel took forever to take off but, thanks to great advice here, I persevered with dry heat!

Please can you help me with:

1. How to date the pen specifically?

2. The brass cap thread has oxidised a little leaving green deposits on half of the thread. How do I clean and restore this safely.

3. Should I lubricate the section to barrel thread (it's still very tough to unscrew)? If so, with what?

Thank you for helping me.

John

Well done on chosing Swan!

The date? I cannot say exactly probably late 1940s - early 1950s.

The brass thread? Frankly these are a bit of a nuisance; one can unscrew the cap and find the section stuck inside having unscrewed itself from the barrel; you then have a big problem. To clean the brass thread, I would protect the section (and barrel if fitted) with masking tape and clean the threads with a fine brass wire brush - a toothbrush might work - and finish off with Brasso.

If you have read the above carefully you will understand that it is not a good idea that the section be easy to unscrew from the barrel, so do not lubricate it!

Best of luck

Thank you Cob, I will proceed carefully with the brass and leave the barrel! When done I'll post a picture. Many thanks, John
