Pilot Ch 91 Vs Pelikan M205

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to find a professional looking and edc pen that is not super expensive. What would you say if you had to choose between these two?

I have the M205 and at first was disappointed with the pen - the way it looked mostly... Over time it has grown on me and I have bought 3 nib units for it... The pen is one tough contender - writes very well, a smooth and wet line that has the pen gliding over the paper with very little hand fatigue. Did I mention it is almost weightless and yet holds a decent amount of ink to finish most tasks without the ink lasting so long that you get bored of the colour? My only regret with this pen is that I did not buy a F nib or that I did not buy another when the US$ conversion rate was good.

The Pilot 91 is a good pen and if I had to EDC it every day my life wouldn't be bad. Someday I hope to get one...

You can't go wrong with a Pelikan, IMO. Just remember they tend to write broad and wet and work from there. I have multiple nib units for mine; the steel nib units run around $30 US and you can buy a M400 nib unit for it if you decide you want a 14K nib. The steel nibs are very good, though.

I have both. The Pelikan plastic feels softer and lighter in comparison and gets scratched more easily while the 91 plastic feels harder and harder. The Pelikan nib is very suitable for daily use and dead reliable, but somehow it's kind of boring. I won't reach out to use it. The 91 gold nib is somewhat softer and hard to control, and that makes me keep using it so as to "conquer" it. But that's for me.

I think the 91 is more worth it in terms of the materials used and the feel. The Pelikan feels somewhat like my 78g. But where the Pelikan goes ahead is the design because it looks really elegant and classy. Their ink capacity is about the same.

The 91 medium writes broader than the Pelikan fine. Hope I've helped you out here.

I never had the CH 91, but I had the CH 92 and have some other pilot pens.

If it were me, I'd go with the Pelikan. The nibs are interchangeable, the piston is fantastic and the pen just writes whenever you need. Pelikans are so good that I keep buying them one after the other :) .

While pilot pens are very good, they never really manage to get me excited (with the exception of the Vanishing Point). They are technically good, but there is always some little thing that bothers me (the low capacity of some converters, the pain that is to clean the Con-70, the fact that you must unscrew the blind cap on the C823, etc.). But, of course, that's just me.

In any case, you probably can't go wrong with any of them. Good luck.

not super expensive I'd go with the CH91 on this one hehehe, CH92 if you like a piston filler like the Pelikan either way what floats your boat

personally I would go for the CH91 as it's cheaper compared to the Pelikan and already has a good selection of nibs which ever will strike your fancy your call

Of the two, I'd prefer the Custom Heritage 91, mainly because I like the Pilot nibs. I have it in the FM (fine medium) size, which is perfect for me. I've read where people describe these as "boring" which has me scratching my head a bit. I guess it means that it puts down a smooth line without any fuss, which is what I want.

On the other hand, I do like the CH 92, with built in piston converter, a little better, just because of the filling system.

I have a Pelikan M205 with EF nib, and it's a good pen too. It would be a perfectly acceptable everyday pen, but I haven't used mine in probably well over a year, maybe two. I just like my Pilots better.

I only have the Pelikan, but for me the choice would be between easily interchangeable nibs (Pelikan) and a gold nib (Pilot). I picked the Pelikan because I wasn't sure at the time that I'd like the width of the fine nib I ordered.

While arguing with nib interchangability while this is where Pilot is weak at after all while exchanging nibs from one numbered custom model to another is easy you would need to end up buying the pen first and then exchange the nib just to get a nib exchange which makes it expensive if you think about it, so this is probably where Pelikan wins unless... Well buying the nib at the same price of the pen just defeats the purpose of just buying the nib but I dont think the nibs for the m400 and m200 are that expensive...

No experience with the 91. But I find my M2xx Pelikans a joy to use. I had two 205's and they vanished on my last June along with some other Pelikans.

I will be back to 4 in about a week. Two 200's,a 120 M&K and a M150 is on its way. One of the M200's

For my money the Pelikan M200 or M205's. Incredibly rugged. Inexpensive nib options to boot. And if you are a serious traveler the P200, a cartridge filler.

Thank you everyone.

I won't ask about nibs as there is a very recent thread.

I will get the m205 which is nice prize and I really like the weight and dimensions.

Once you get it and have used it for a bit,let us know what you think.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
