Caran D'ache Varius Snakewood Fp.

Hi, all. I'm new here, so I hope this is neither in the wrong section, or inappropriate.

I'm pretty much exclusively a Sheaffer FP user, and although I don't have any of real value (mostly utilitarian No-Nonsense), I'm looking to find a Nostalgia some day.

In the meantime, I have what I believe is a CdA Varius, in Snakewood, which I never use, and am considering putting up for sale. I neither have the box, or the documentation, so finding the name was a matter of looking online and checking what looked most similar.

Am I correct in the identification? I read the nibs were Rhodium, but wouldn't that conflict with the 18C? What would this likely go for? It apparently isn't made any more, and found very few for sale, so it's hard to figure a price from the original; and I know that an eBay "for sale" price doesn't mean that's what it will sell for, or that that's the fair price.

Thanks in advance for any help.

BTW, the nib is an M, and it says 18C and 750.

Yes, that is the Varius Snakewood and I believe you are correct in that it is not being made anymore. The nibs are gold but may be rhodium plated.

Thanks for the answer, jar! I did some research about Rhodium plating, and that sounds right.

Any idea of the value of such a pen?

'fraid not but my Metwood seems to get into rotation even more often than my Sheaffer Ft. Madison Stubs.

Fill it and give it a try.

Unfortunately, I need to raise some cash, and it's either this, or other items I actually use. But I admit I do like the weight and "feel" of it.

Hard to say what the value is. Looking at eBay's completed/sold listings, there's one C'dA Snakewood that sold for around US $1K and there's a rollerball listed at US$630...however, it's hard to estimate value with only 1-2 samples. You could try putting it up on eBay with a reserve price and see who bites/whether it sells?

(FYI, there was another Snakewood rollerball that sold for $200, but the seller had misspelled the pen's name...double-check the spelling if you decide to sell it via eBay.)

Yes, I checked out eBay, and specialized sites. Anywhere between $700 and $1200 for a NOS on regular sites.

I'd rather steer clear from eBay as a seller: between the fee gouging, possible PayPal scams/chargebacks, etc., and apart from the heightened online visibility, there's not much incentive to go there as a seller.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
