Karas Kustoms Fountain-K

Thanks for the review and the others that also contributed.

I've been thinking of getting one for quite some time (I still haven't left the "heavy pens" phase), and it was nice to read reviews of people that owned those for longer times, not only the usual few days of ownership we see on the internet.

Just to follow up on my previous post, I was able to successfully get through an entire converter's worth of ink using the methods of inking up the pen that I mentioned. I love the pen, however for any prospective buyers, I would recommend purchasing through a retailer like Goulet who will actually provide customer service for the pen, which is not what I got from Karas directly.

I had a ton of issues with my first Ink. Turns out the converter was cracked. Now I have three Inks all with Titanium nibs. Fantastic pens overall.

What size did you get? My Ti nib is an F, but it seems on the flabby side. I may need to get an EF too.

EF, F, M. I like them and use them fairly regularly.

Good review - thanks. I keep getting tempted by these and the Ink. I've had no issues with Bock no.6 nibs so far, but both no.5's needed adjustments.

After having this pen well over a year, I thought I'd just add some final notes about it. . .

I still don't really trust it with a converter. I mean, I could make it work with a converter, but I'd always feel wary and have to be careful immediately after filling it from the bottle. I trust the Karas Ink much more with a converter, since it has a larger ink collector and has never burped.

When used with cartridges the Fountain-K has been 100% dependable in all respects. I've rarely used cartridges, but I got some Herbin Perle Noir carts (high quality, unlike the cheap generic carts this pen came with!), and they work superbly in the Fountain-K.

The other thing I want to add is that the Fountain-K seals up very, very well when capped. It can sit idle for days or weeks, then I pick it up and find it writes perfectly. (This seems to be equally true of the Karas Ink.)

And... Finally, I'd like to repeat what I observed back in the very beginning. This really does seem to me like a modern-day counterpart of the Esterbrook J. It's small, solid and durable, easy to repair and maintain, dependable, doesn't cost too much. It's very much an "EDC" workaday pen as opposed to a fancy collector's item.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
