What's Your Choices - Cigar Shaped Fountain Pens

Hi everyone,

Since I'm fairly new to fountain pens, I don't know them all yet.

Right now I have 3 pens and I want to build a nice collection of FP, but only the type I really like. My first pen has been a TWSBI, it's a cool pen, but am I in love with it? Not really but it's my first one so I like it. I also have an Edison Pen and a Laban Mento, those ones I love them, especially because of their shape and style.

Eventually I want to get a Classic Pen but I'm not their yet. In the meantime, what brand would you recommend me to look at? Like I said I really like Cigar Shaped FP but that has a lot of style like Laban, Edison and Classic Pen.

Thanks!

How about one of the classic cigar shaped pens that started classic cigar shaped pens? A Sheaffer Balance lever fill white dot or non-white dot pen from the thirties can be found for very reasonable costs, will write wonderfully and still be around for your kids to give to their kids.

I wonder what Freud had to say about 'cigar shaped' fountain pens?

Ink has something in common with both money and manure. It's only useful if it's spread around.

Limiting myself to those I've already got and know their behavior:

- Pilot Custom 823

- Sheaffer Balance lever-fill

- Platinum 3776 Century

- Sheaffer Triumph ('40s version) vacfill

- Pilot 743 (WA nib)

Except for the 743, I've got two or three of each mentioned type. Because I had to make sure that I actually liked the first of each type, you know.

My grandfather's Sheaffer Balance vac-fill - and not just because it was my grandfather's; it's also a great pen.

My favorite cigars are the Italix Parson's Essential and the Edison Collier. For the rest I'm more of a flattopper really ;-)

They have been known to cause "pen(--) envy" among women....

Or....not....

IMHO......my Edison Herald is about as "stogie-ish" as they come!!!:)

Always try to get the dibs....on fountain pens with EF nibs!!

You can build a collection just on the Sheaffer Balance and all of its variants. Sheaffer vintage nibs are simply incredible, and the ease of a lever filler is something you quickly admire and enjoy.

Modern Japanese pens like the Sailor 1911 and Platinum #3776 also borrow this classic design and are exceptional writers.

Finally, Mont Blanc could be the foundation of its own collection. You'd have to decide if your wallet can stand that strain. I went the used route, and my 149 is filled right now.

I don't even remember where I got it but I've always liked the finish. Probably the first US pen design incorporating raden.

The top pen was likely from 1934 and the lower pen likely from 1935-39 or so.
