Waterman Preface

First Impressions

Very solid feeling and looking pen. It looks very classy without being gaudy. I was plesantly surprised when I first wrote with it. I was halfway expecting to not like it that much, but this is my first Waterman. Very nice pen for the price point < $100.

 

Appearance

Very nice looking pen. I normally lean towards black pens with silver trim, and this pen is a little more shiny than I would normally prefer. I think it is very tastefully done though. As I said above, it is classy without being gaudy. It isn’t decorated just for the sake of being decorated.

 

Nib

The nib has a very homely appearance. It looks very similar to my Pelikano in terms of appearance only. It is 18k gold though (in contrast to the Pelikano’s SS). Writing with it was a different story though. This is the absolute smoothest nib I’ve ever had the pleasure of writing with. I was a little shocked. It just glides over the paper, almost as if I was writing with a felt tipped marker. It has a nice semi-wet line that is a true ‘medium’ in size. This is my first Waterman, so I’m not sure if all Watermans are this smooth or if this one is exceptional.

 

Filling System

Cartridge/Converter. The Waterman converter seems to be very nice. I’ve gotten 8 A4 sized pages with it. I’ve never messed with cartridges in it though.

 

Cost and Value

Again, for the price, this pen is just amazing. It writes better than anything I’ve wrote with. Granted, I’ve never wrote with anything $500+ (but I’m not sure that writing quality gets better with a higher price-tag).

 

Conclusion

If someone is looking for a true workhorse writer I’d really encourage you to check this out. It writes fantastically, and you don’t have to pay for unnecessary looks to get a superb pen. It was a little thin for my taste, so I took a bit off for that. Purely a subjective thing though.

I have a beautiful version in green. Unfortunately though, it skips. Very smooth, but every five lines it skips badly. Nothing seems to work, tried various inks etc.
