Question About Namiki Wooden Tube Boxes

Recommended Posts

I purchased a Namiki Emperor pen recently that was not packaged in the typical wooden box. Instead it came in a cylinder that is tan in color. It also came with an ink pot in a smaller version of the box and a wooden pen stand I had not seen before. The wood lids of the tubes have a rubber o-ring to create a bit of a seal.

The large tube contains the pen and the eyedropper in dedicated, drilled out slots.

I have seen this type of packaging in a few older photos for Emperor pens, but I am not sure when it might have been used, if it was for a special occasion, if it was for store display, or for some other reason. I'm turning to the experts here for more information. I know this is not important in the grand scheme of things, but I was curious. I have not collected Namiki pens before so I'd love to learn more about what I have.

I can't answer your questions, but that's some of the best pen packaging I've ever seen. Much better than a pleather covered cardboard box.

I just did some Google image searches and the only example I could find is your exact pen on a Belgian auction site. I'm curious now. I hope someone has some knowledge about this.

Any further photos of the pen case? I have an Emperor, and finding a way to move it is a bugger...

Too many pens; too little writing.

Sure. Here are some photos. The pen case comes with some of the maki-e #50 pens. It is leather and embossed with the logo. The ball of the clip sticks out which is a little annoying. The case is nice enough, but not super rugged. I would use it in a brief case or carefully in a small backpack compartment, but not toss it into a large compartment with hard cover books, keys, etc.

You got an Emperor!! Gorgeous pen and packaging! Hope to see a review in the future.

Thanks rpsyed. It is a lovely pen but there are some issues with the finish on mine. I'll be posting a review once I get the pen to a condition I am happy with. (Ah the joys of buying a second-hand pen off the internet!)

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. I've heard good things about Namiki's warranty service on their Emperor pens, so hopefully you'll get it sorted out. It's a beautiful pen!

I'd love to get an Emperor one day, but since I just ordered a Romillo Sil #9, it'll probably be a while before I can buy another pen in that price range.

Dear Zaddick,

Congratulations on purchasing your first emperor.

You mentioned that it's a second hand pen, right? I read somewhere that namiki gives lifetime warranty over the life of it's original owner. I would like to hear Namiki's response on the warranty issue if you could share that.

Best Regards

Mew

  • 4 weeks later...

I just opened my vermilion No. 50 today. It came in the regular rectangular pauwlonia wood box. Any idea if the leather case you have can be obtained separately, or if there are any other options for transporting such a huge pen?

I am not sure if they are sold separately. I'd contact Pilot USA in Florida to see what they may have available. Otherwise a leather cigar tube or a nice pen wrap could be a good option.

If you need the urushi finish repaired and if Namiki cannot help, I can recommend Hakumin Urushi. Ernest Shin has helped me repair the Chinese lacquer on an ST Dupont Orpheo that had unfortunately seen some UV-induced damage over its life.

Yes, thank you for the recommendation. He was the first person I contacted. It is with Pilot repair now and I am waiting for an update. If they will not repair it for free it will go to Ernest.

I hunted around on eBay and found an extra-large zippered leather case from Airline International, made specifically for Emperor-sized pens. Ordered two of them for $50 including shipping.
