Leaking Nib On 580?

So my pen is 1/4 full of ink and once in a while ink will build up on the feed and drops of ink will fall out randomly (not often). Is this normal and fixable?

Cheers.

It is not normal. Did you disassemble the pen completely ?

I faced similar trouble when 10% ink was left in my TWSBI 580 Al.

Ink - Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-Kusa.

Waterman Serenity Blue - ok.

Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite - some problems could be seen at 5% ink level.

I guess TWSBI 580 reservoir volume is too large for some inks.

Looks like depression(vacuum) when ink level is low is not sufficient to hold the ink in the desired place.

Sometimes ink gets between the clear plastic grip section and the feed collar. But no leaks that escape from the pen.

I had something similar to this happen over the period of a month: leaking where the nib unit threads into the body and ink dripping from the nib here and there. My TWSBI 580 was a 1/3 full when it turned into a massive mess yesterday.

I've since done a full disassemble of the pen. Cleaned it, allowed it to dry, applied silicone grease to piston, all threaded parts, save for the cap and where it twists on to the pen. It's fully inked and will be put to use today.

Fingers crossed.

Check out the following thread: So Has Anyone's TWSBI Not Broken?

You'll read about potential causes, fix ideas, notes on warranty and how to get parts or a defective pen replaced. After reading through the thread, tack on your experience--I like to believe TWSBI reads the 3 year old thread to make note on potential improvements to be applied for future releases.

Curious.

I've heard that small metal balls can help to prevent ink burps, something about "breaking tention" in the ink within the barrel. I dunno. Anyhow, this has helped with pens I've converted to eyedroppers. If my nib continues to drip ink, I'll try adding a metal ball. If it leaks from the join, where the nib unit screws into the body of the pen, I'll suspect a crack in the threads.

I found an earlier topic abt the same issue

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/219673-twsbi-ink-flow-out-of-control/

IMHO the problem is not in barrel heating by hand and respective air extension but in lacking of pressure difference inside and outside the barrel at some specific ink level.

For time being I am going to select a suitable ink.

Pilot Iroshizuku looks the worst (repeat - in association with TWSBI Diamond, no complains abt VAC 700 because the ink flow can be managed by the valve), Pelikan Edelstein looks better, Waterman is the best.

If TWSBI Diamond 540/580 owners share their experience with different inks we could save a lot of our time and effort.

Try a dryer ink, like Pelikan.

I had a Parker 180 that would drool ink, with Parker Quink.

The drooling stopped, after I switched to Cross/Pelikan ink.
