I think you will enjoy the pen more than the anticipation ;)

When you open the box it's an imposing looking piece of work.

I have since got me a burgundy as well, but with a fine italic nib, and it's as smooth as the medium.

I love them both....brilliant pens.

Just ordered the Captain's Commission yesterday, after watching several YouTube reviews. The pen looks stunning. It was a toss up as to whether to order the Parson's Essential or the Captains Commission. At some point I will be ordering the Parsons Essential as well. Looking forward to receiving this beauty...

Many thanks for the reviews, on the strength of the comments here I've just purchased a Parsons Essential with a fine italic nib. Having seen this I realise 'I MUST' also purchase a Italix Captain's Commission In burgundy, so many nib choices ;-)

 

Your pen looks fabulous, I'm actually quite excited to try both a medium & a broad italic now!

May I ask if a standard JoWo #6 nib fits the Captain's Commission?

No, but the #5 does. If you buy the nib in its standard feed and housing, you can screw the whole thing into the the Parson's.

I've seen one reviewer complain about their Parson's Essential drying up after two to four pages of writing and noted that it's a common issue with standard international c/c pens. Anyone else have that experience with their Italix pens?

I've had exactly that experience. No idea why.

I don't have a Parsons, but I do have 2 Captains Commissions and a Churchmans Prescriptor, and I have never had any issues whatsoever with any of them, other than not being able to put them down. :)

Pretty sure this is a #6 Jowo on the Captain's Commission. The Parson's Essential is a #5.

I recently bought an Edison 1.5 Stub Nib from he who's name starts with a 'G'. 🤔 The whole nib unit screwed into the Parsons Essential perfectly. Turned it into a totally different writer. Of all the Mr. Pen Italix pens I have, that one is the only pen that I've made a nib change. An that was not because it didn't write well, I just wanted a stub. I love the way the pen feels in my hand, so it was the logical candidate. All of my MrPen Italix pens write incredibly well. I have 3 Parson's Essential, Churchman's Prescriptor, and Captain's Commission.

Mr Ford, the owner of MrPen tunes each nib by hand before sending it out the door.

I don't think you have to worry about replacing nibs. Plus MrPen is pretty good about fixing problems and making customers happy.

I've had exactly that experience. No idea why.

Try an Edison nib unit. I think their feed system brings a generous amount of ink to the nib. I didn't have a problem with my parson's Essential, but when I screwed the Edison Stub into it, the pen became a much wetter writer.

If you compare photos of the Edison #5 nib unit and the standard JoWo unit, they seem identical. The increased flow in the Edison may be due to tuning by Mr Gray.

I think you're right. Edison nibs do seem to be tuned up a bit. Different from the standard Jowo.

Can't say why, but the ink flow seems better too. Maybe they tweak the nib to smooth it, then mess with the feed as well.

I'm pretty sure that's the case: Edison Pens and Goulet Pens (and also Anderson Pens) all source their nibs from JoWo, though only the Edisons sell them as a nib assembly. Goulets quality check their nibs before sending, to make sure they're aligned and smooth; Brian Gray of Edison Pens I think goes somewhat further - his "Signature Line" (custom made) pens are individually customised to the buyer's taste; "Production Line" pens (and nib units) I think are still adjusted and tweaked for smoothness and flow.

 

I have a number of JoWo nibs from fpnibs.com - a couple of the stub nibs needed a little adjusting on arrival (though to be fair they had to travel across an ocean to get to me!), but they were otherwise pretty good writers. The two Edison nibs I snapped up when isellpens was closing down were smooth and wetter than usual. It's only a small "sample size", but accords with the things I've come across on Edison and Goulet youtube videos.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
