Hobonichi Techo - Using Cover On Cover With Leather Covers?

Has anyone tried this, and has it turned out to be safe for the leather? I want to buy a leather cover but I'm worried about the dye rubbing off or the leather getting dirty.

Thanks!

I have an A6 "Duck Egg Blue" leather cover that's been tossed around in my bag for nearly 3 years. It's a little (very little) dirty and the treatment has been rough. It looks nice - soft and "worn in".

I also have a midnight blue textured leather A5 cover that I bought last year. It still looks brand new and the only change is it feels softer (better). Light colors will show marks sooner but I've been thinking of buying the white leather cover because they're so nice and the quality is excellent.

IMO the "cover on cover", while great for the fabric covers, is unnecessary for the leather ones.

I agree with Newjelan. The leather covers are good quality and are very well made; they look and feel better as they get older. The cover-on-cover is unnecessary and wouldn't look right over leather.

I have a leather cover that has had vigorous daily use (tossed into bags, onto desk, fallen off things) and it looks good, just shows the evidence of daily use and a nicely developing patina. It's black, so I don't know about a light colour of leather - the duck-egg blue sounds fantastic, by the way - but personally I'd just invest in a good leather cleaner rather than put an extra plastic cover on the Hobo.

Have you considered a cloth pouch or bag to protect your planner is in transit? Something like the cloth bag for the Midori covers.

I actially got the robins egg blue cover when it came out, but I soon noticed that the blue dye had rubbed off in a couple of small spots, so I was afraid to use it again :( I love the look of the Rosso and black goatskin covers, but I'm really afraid of the dye rubbing off, hence my consideration of getting one with a cover-on-cover....

Hi Josey!

I thought I had read on their site last year that using a cover on cover with the leather could potentially be harmful to it so they advised against it. It was something about the chemicals used in the production of the cover on cover. I too was worried about the dye rubbing off. I wonder if it is a way to treat the leather to prevent it?

Ooh is it the TS black leather cover? That tempted me!

I'm wondering if first washing the cover-on-cover would make it safe?

Also, has anyone had experiance with the leather treatment products the Hobonicho store sells?

This is from a google search from last year's Hobonichi site:

"The PVC vinyl of the Cover on Cover contains plasticizer additives which may cause a reaction in the leather dye and affect the color and quality of the leather ..."

I am not sure if cleaning it will help. I wonder if there is something you can apply to the actual leather to help set the dye and prevent transfer. Perhaps someone who knows more about leather can chime in....

I hope you find a solution soon. My fears concerning the leather stopped me from taking the leap last year. I just stayed with the regular fabric covers.

UPDATE: A product like this one is what I was referring to above. I have never used it but I wonder if it will seal the leather and prevent the dye from running:

No, I got my black leather cover from a Canadian Etsy shop - very nicely made, and made precisely for the Hobo A6 size.

I don't know about the leather treatment sold by Hobonichi, but I do recommend leather treatment products with beeswax in them. They're not as greasy as those used for waterproofing leather boots, and there is no residue so you can use it and go. It also smells like honey! I don't have a brand to recommend as I bought mine at a local market, sold by the producer.

Maybe mine was "robin egg blue" (ducks, robins, something) but I haven't experienced the leather wearing off in patches or at all. It looks even nicer now than 3 yrs ago.

Thanks for posting the picture Josey.

There appears to be a considerable amount of wear on this cover on the top left corner and the face.

This looks like chrome tanned leather which is very hard wearing and I would expect it to take many years to accumulate this level of wear.

As others have mentioned the issue with the protective cover and leather I would think the best course of action would be to contact the supplier or manufacturer.

That's weird, because it looks very close to how it looked when I received it from Hobonichi :/ It's only the tan marks I'm concerned about, as I have no idea how the dye coukd have rubbed off so quickly with minimal handling! But...yeah, hence my general worry ;_;

The tan marks I can see in the picture are mainly in the centre on line with what I think are pen loops the tan colour looks like the leather before the colour was applied.

My best guess is it s a faulty batch as the dye does not appear to have penetrated the surface of the leather. If the hide was not cleaned properly or was contaminated during the process then the dye will sit on the surface and will appear patchy and rub off with minimal contact.

I had a similar problem with an index card case I applied a wax too early in the process and the dye just rubbed off.
