The Edson - Discontinuation

From Waterman Customer Service,

We can confirm that we haven’t got any intern communication regarding an eventual Edsons discontinuation .

Take this whichever way you like but when business is concerned I always liken such to football managers, 'I have been discussing my future with the board and they back me 100%'. In most cases, within a few days, they are leaving the club 'by mutual consent'...in other words SACKED with a nice BIG golden handshake.

What replaces the Edson as the high-end Waterman?

Maybe this is the beginning of Waterman - Parker consolidation? A version of the Duofold becomes a high-end Waterman; version of the Carene replaces the Parker Premier; Sonnet hits the market below the Carene? (Would need some fiddling with cartridge formats, of course)

Couldn't help it but this would be my reaction to a Waterman-Parker merger:

If they merge, I hope they replace all of those pens with something with a different design. Surprise me!

No Sonnets, if they end the Edson, please end the Sonnet. As much as I liked the looks of the ones I have, no more.

Waterman Edson seems to be in the 2016 catalogue without restrictions - so maybe a false rumour?

I visited my favourite B&M shop today (La Couronne du Comte) and noticed the absence of the Edson.

On my question it was confirmed that the Edson will be phased out.

Shops still can order them, but it takes a long time before an order is fulfilled especially the rarer nibs.

Various brands are scaling down their gamma. Pelikan confirmed that almost all of the student type pens are phasing out with only a few colours still available at Pelikan BeNeLux. Perhaps Germany has still more choice in these Pelikans.

I thought a note here for those thinking of buying one or two before the 'end' and considering exchanging the nib/section.

Here is the reply from my contact in Customer Service.

Thank you for your email.

We are pleased to inform you that Parker and Waterman does offer a nib exchange program You can have a stub nib for your Edson . If the nib is in perfect condition we will exchange it at no cost to you.

Important : We can only accept an exchange for a similar front end – same value.

In order to record your pen in our system for repair, we would be glad if you could let us know your full address.

Upon receipt of your contact details, you will receive an automatic email with your “Return Material Authorization (RMA)” reference and how to proceed to send your pen to us.

Should your nib not be in perfect condition, then we will issue and send you a quote for approval before carrying out the exchange. You will then decide if you approve or refuse the costs.

Please note: Standard lead-time for service/repair is 3 weeks when no quote is issued. When we need to quote a price for service/repair our standard lead-time is longer.

Please do not return your writing instrument in its original gift box. We recommend that you package your writing instrument securely in bubble wrap and place it in a padded mailer or box.

Unfortunately they do not have barrels or nib sections for the Ruby and Emerald models.

Well, I broke down and bought a new one several months ago. I wanted one that wasn't " pre-owned " or even " test driven ". Whether or not they will be phased out, I'd been wanting to get one anyway. I purchased the Sapphire Blue so it wasn't one that was hard to locate.

Yes, I suppose I'm spoiled.

That makes sense since the Ruby and Emerald were discontinued many moons ago. Still, unfortunate.

I can recommend the stub nibs, though. I have Edsons in ruby, emerald and sapphire, all with stub nibs. Maybe redundant, but I love the Edson stubs and I have been using mine for quite a long time. They are more italic than stub, and they work wonders for my handwriting. That stub magic combined with the comfort of the Edson model in my hand makes for a wonderful writing experience. I will be genuinely saddened if Waterman does decide to phase out the Edson.

Contacted my B&M shop. As of this week, the whole repair-section has moved to Poland.

He lost his contacts with Waterman France. A nib exchange would amount to buying a new nib at around 650 EUR official price.

So, no thanks, my M nibs are nice enough...

I want to buy one of these edsons (i'm in the uk). on amazon they about £470 medium, or £620 fine, there are no other options. Some of the customer reviews hint that these might be returned pens.

I usually have fine.As my hand writing is rubbish i'm wondering if the stub would be better. The blue is lovely but the top is too flash, so maybe the plainer black.

How can i get one? (new)

If you are not happy you can return it. If you are happy then send it to Waterman for a nib exchange.

You buy a medium and send it to Waterman for the nib exchange to stub or fine. Contact them first to determine availability. It costs you postage only to Waterman CS UK.

Have you seen this...no affiliation.

As most people want M nibs these days, that is what most shops order, and more and more companies provide. For thos few wishing another nib, either the store can ordere another size, or there is the exchange system which many brands have.

Big shops tend to store more options for very popular pens, but usually it is like with T-Fords. You can order any colour as long as it is black......

As I said in my previous post (above), I have three Edsons, all with stub nibs. I bought all three with M nibs because that was all the vendors had, but I was able to send the pens for nib exchanges. Since the pens were new, the exchange cost me only the price of postage. I can say that, at the time, the exchange system worked. I do have to point out that those exchanges were made nigh on to 20-years ago. I love those stub nibs enough that I can encourage others to at least give the current exchange system a try. - Just one man's opinion.

If you look at my reply in post 12 you will see that that proves a problem. With the Edson phasing out this will become more and more difficult.
