After running a pen with an aggressive ink, BSB, the 1670s and the like, I like to clean the pen out, then give it a break with a fill or two of "cleaner ink", that is, one mild and easy on pens that may get any lingering crud out that a disassembly missed. My favorite is good reliable Skrip Blue. Anyone else like doing this?

Which fountain pen mechanism is the subject of this inquiry ? Usually, plain water works for me. In more difficult cases, a 10% household ammonia to water solution, followed by a a plain water finish flush, works great. It takes but a couple of minutes. Then, any ink I please.

I find Quink Washable Blue to be good for getting the last bits of old ink out of an old pen after rinsing.

 

ETA: At least it's good for something.

Yep, I wash with tap water, shake dry and either store it or fill it with a new ink. Of course I only use well-behaved inks like Quink, Waterman, Pilot and Aurora.

I don't have an ink for flushing out gunk. (Maybe I could use Noodler's Black?)

 

However, I do like Noodler's Rattler Eel Red as a de-staining ink. It does a great job removing stains from the insides of pens.

Proud resident of the least visited state in the nation!

Wow. That's crazy. What is in an ink that would clean out a pen like that? Will those inks un-stain a Pli-glass sac too?

I do this regardless of mechanism. Eyedropper, vac, converter, piston, just seems helpful.

I do too, it's a nice light blue. But it fades, even out of direct light: it's like vanishing ink! :D

Another vote for Sailor Do You. It got Bilberry out of a TWSBI Mini, which I didn't think was actually possible. Clean as a proverbial whistle.

 

I believe it is down to whatever, banned in the West, super lubricating chemicals Sailor, and or rather their 'Ink Master', puts in Do You. Do You is by far the easiest flowing (but not watery so) ink I have ever encountered.

Plus...it's a kickass color. ;)

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

 

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

LGSoltek, you've convinced me. I'm trying it on this pen! I've never tried Rattler Red on it, but I will try your suggestion and track the results.

Amber, we mention Rattler Red Eel as a cleaner ink because of your pics of some blue-stained pen before and after a fill of RRE.

 

I don't have RRE. I have Widow Maker, which I vaguely suspect of being one of those staining reds. I have tried a fill of Waterman Purple to deal with staining left in a cartridge after a few fills of Borealis Black, which was mitigated.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
