Cocobolo Flat Top

A cocobolo flat top. The clip is of brass. Cocobolo is beautiful and fascinating wood. It has a high oil content and as of now I have used no finish, just polished with 1000 grit giving it a nice satin look and feel. I understand that the wood can be an allergen to some people. I was very careful with the dust and I would apply a finish before I passed it along to someone.

Hello, good work..

I am also planning to make one with cocobolo.

Yet, i was a little bit anxcious about threading the wood M13x.75x3 tap&dye..

 

I hope cocobolo gives a good result for a lifetime threading?

As to threading wood in general, I don't, I use Delrin or Ebonite threaded coupling inserts. In my experience threading interrupts the wood fibers and the threads may shear off eventually. Although I haven't tried threading Cocobolo, Ebony or some of the other denser woods.

Nice looking pen Joseph. I just finished one recently in Red Mallee. Cocobola is next on the wood list.

It looks like a brass ring in the cap, did you use a tube for support? For my Red Mallee one, I used an ebonite sleeve all the way through.

Yes, For wood pens, I use brass tubing bonded to the inside of the wood before final turning. I often use ebonite for the threaded couplings, an full ebonite sleeve is a neat idea.
