What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

My local pen show is in June. I have been holding off on purchases until then. Well, sort of. A Montblanc 24 just grabbed me!

So, I recently figured out that I like vintage Montblancs from the 1960s through the 1980s. First, I acquired two Montblanc 144's. Then, a Montblanc 14, with the hooded 18kt gold nib and Pope's hat band.  I was planning on adding a Montblanc 12, which is the smaller version of the No. 14. But, I stumbled upon a No. 24 that I could not pass up. Very nice writer.

Sounds like a nice collection, and a great one to build on.

BTW, WELCOME to FPN!

I have only one Sailor in my entire collection (a red Realo), but somehow the collection would not be complete without it, and I do very much enjoy the pen. I do like Sailor nibs. So I guess that's one voice for Sailor... :)

Sailor it is! Thanks, I really appreciate your input. I've always heard such great things about Sailor, and I enjoy a good nib with some feedback. The only thing I feared was not being able to hold myself back from getting one of their specialty grinds. The Naginata-Togi seems like it'd be awfully nice for practicing Shodo...

The Cross Peerless uses Sailor nibs. so that's another option.

Hey, that's right! I also like the idea of getting Cross pens to complete the set. That would certainly complete some interesting parities. I guess I need to meditate more on what I where I want to take this collection.

I've only got one from that crowd, a nice 22 from the 1970s with a cool winged 14k F nib... but reading your post made me realize that I rarely ink it up. It's just a little too small for me, I think. Might be time to trade up...

You folks are such enablers.

I just ordered a Franklin-Christoph Model 45 XLV in Diamondcast Green with a HPS Broad Stub nib.

And before even receiving this pen, I found myself on the Kanpur Writers website looking at the nib combo they offer for the Kanwrite Desire (1 B regular, 1 B architect, 1 B stub). Shipping was twice the price of the nibs, so I threw in a Kanwrite Heritage piston filler with a BB stub.

So two stubs on the way, plus nibs to play with!

My last impulse purchase was... a Pilot Capless Decimo! Just put in the order for it three days ago. It will be joining a Vanishing Point, Grance and a Metal Falcon to complete a quartet of Pilot gold-nibbed, brass-bodied, black lacquer and silver trim pens.

Congratulations!  I really like my Decimos (the full size Vanishing Points don't work well for my hand, but the size of the Decimos?  Perfect!  What color Decimo did you get?

Today's impulse buy was a vintage pen/pencil combo at an estate sale; not sure what it is, other than the pen part is a lever filler.  Haven't had a chance to look it over carefully yet (after leaving the sale I had to go to a battery store to get replacement batteries for the light on my loupe).  It's a flattop in sort of a mottled light and dark pattern, and has a sort of floral design on the clip.  Don't know if this is a hint, but it was in a box that said "Diamond Medal Diplomat" on a ribbon in the lid.  Not in the greatest shape (I suspect the sac is toast, and I may have to have the lever box replaced as well; plus the nib slit seems a bit off center) -- but for five bucks US, I decided it needed a new home....

Thanks! I got mine in black and rhodium, same as my other gold-nibbed Pilots. I'm trying to keep all the pens in this storage case black and silver. It's something of a weird obsession I have...

Excellent point. A Sailor writing experience on a Cross body is also interesting.

Well, a bit of an update from yesterday's post....

I looked at the pen/pencil combo in better light last night.  It says "GOOD SERVICE PEN CO." and "CHICAGO, IL" (with what might be a date code) with the initials SR in a circle in between the two imprints on the barrel, all about 180° from the lever and lever box.  I found a very old FPN thread from 2007 which said that Good Service was a Sears & Roebuck house brand, and that another house brand was "Diamond Medal" (so the pen/pencil and the box aren't that far off the mark from each other.

One of my Cross Solos -- the one I bought from the estate of a friend -- is actually marked "Made in Japan" on the cap or barrel (I forget which offhand)  I had been wondering which Japanese company had made it.  I liked it so well that when I had a chance to buy a second one (in a different color, and with a different nib) I didn't hesitate.  And would happily buy other colors if the opportunity arose and the prices weren't too bad -- they really are very nice pens for the money I paid (IIRC $18 US + the cost of a converter for the first one, and $25, with a converter already installed, for the second one).

I've been wanting a new C&S pen in green that was slimmer than the Churchill I have (5 stars BTW) for some time.  While I had hoped for a no. 58 or 100, I had to get this Duro as soon as I saw the email advert.  It is a limited edition with only 9 (including the one I bought) available.

I also just bought two vintage Wyverns last night.

Smiles all round!

I really shouldn't have, given all that I have ordered lately, but...

I just ordered a Conklin Endura Abalone Limited Edition in the gunmetal finish. I really wanted the chrome edition that is a Goulet Pens exclusive, but they were sold out. At $62.50 (thanks to a Memorial Day coupon!) though, I can deal with not having the trim I prefer!!

I plan to save this for my now 8 year old daughter and give it to her when she is older and I think she is ready. I'll have to get her something entry level first. Once she is used to using a fountain pen -- and I'm sure she won't lose or destroy the Conklin -- it will be a birthday present! Hoping around 13 or 14 she will be ready. I'm really excited about giving it to her...hoping I can endure the long wait!! And hoping she ends up cherishing it.

Of course, I must ink it to be sure the nib writes correctly and doesn't run dry after a few pages, etc!! LOL.

That sounds like an excellent plan.

I would suggest that at age 8, this might be the time to start her fountain pen journey.   I would recommend a Pelikano Junior as a starter pen for her.  Amazon.com : Pelikan Pelikano Jr. Fountain Pen, Right-Handed, Medium Nib, Blue, 1 Pen, 940874 : Pelikano Jumior : Office Products

An excellent suggestion! She will be learning cursive in school next year, might as well get that for her birthday in July! Thank you.

Yesterday, I purchased a Kaweco Sport V16 - from the 1960s, I believe. I don't see these piston-filler vintage Sport models turn up often, unless ordering from Germany or eastern Europe. So I was thrilled to see one for a good price on r/pen_swap and had to jump on it before someone else did.

Looking forward to receiving it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
