What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

It is time to make a confession . . .  I have finally decided to add a Parker to my collection after years of dismissing the brand. I have gone ahead and ordered myself what many here (and the late Queen) consider a must, the Parker 51. No doubt all the vintage-lovers here will gasp, tut, or grumble and mumble; mine will be plum, but not vintage plum.

Oh, you'll quickly find that one 51 isn't enough (especially if you end up going down the "vintage pen" rabbit hole).  Those pens were just designed and engineered too be what they are -- the best writing instruments on the planet!

I'd dearly love to get a full sized vintage Plum, to go along with my demi-size one, but the prices just give me nosebleeds and probably would give me altitude sickness as well.... :crybaby:

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thanks Ruth. I don't think I'll be hopping down the vintage rabbit hole, even though I hear great things about them. I am just not a fan of the filling systems used -- neither the vacuumatic, nor the aerometric. I've another pen with a converter similar to the aerometric and I find the amount of ink I can get in one fill is not enough for my writing habits. I have more confidence in the modern twist converters, I just hope the nib is better than the nail I had with my first fountain pen, the modern IM. Since the plum comes with a gold nib, not steel, my hopes are high . . .

I thought I was going to have an impulsive purchase today.

We are visiting our daughter and my wife and I were at the Grove. I was lamenting how there are no pen stores in LA. She got on her Apple maps and found Pacific Penworks 600 feet down the street from the mall. So we walked there and when we got to the location it was a shipping container store. We went in and they said Pacific Penworks has a mailbox with them!

I guess Pacific Penworks is just an on line store?

2. Onoto Faraday

3. Onoto Magna Ebonite

Yes. No brick-and-mortar retail operation.

I received a marketing email about the release of the new TWSBI Eco in Bahama Yellow today. Surprise. Cool colour... a light yellow ochre I'm guessing from the image on my crummy phone. Muted, rather than eye-searing. Yay. I ordered it with an extra fine nib. And a 30ml bottle of Diamine Golden Brown. 💛

Will work for pens...

@AmandaW I have Diamine Golden Brown ink.

Do you like it? Some reviews say it can be a bit dry which might not be good with an EF nib.

At first I was surprised by it. I think it’s more gold than brown. It’s easy to read. I’m not sure about it being dry. I had it in a pen with a 1.1mm italic nib. I should consider it for a pen again.

Instead of waiting, I got the 80ml bottle of it.

I got myself a really nice Kaweco Sport pen and ballpoint set from the 1950s at the Cologne Pen Show yesterday.

That´s the BROADEST Kaweco nib I have ever seen!

And I was able to pick up a very nice fountain pen related book, "Une affaire de stylos" by Pierre Haury and Jean-Pierre Lacroux from 1990 for the price of two beers. 😂

Oh, that Kaweco set is so cool. Great find! Forgive me father, for I have penned. We were in Dromgoole’s for a while yesterday. We were there because Kim wanted to do the FIY glow in the dark Kaweco event, I swear! But, this Taccia Miyabi somehow found its way into our bag.

My impulsive pen acquisition of the week - there's 2.  I've been on eBay again which is never good, but also selling pens on Reddit which is offsetting the pain.

Vintage Onoto Magna 1873 Plunger BCHR - Unknown working condition, but likely needs new cork seals (I'll try with silicon o-rings first) and hopefully not new plunger seals.  I have spare plunger rods if needed.

Conway Stewart 286 in Green Marble.  I really need to stop getting green marble pens.  If I didn't have a couple of BCHR and a Blue Marble Conway Stewart in constant rotation, my day would be very, very green indeed.

Bought three pens yesterday at an estate sale.  Guess you could call them impulse buys because I didn't look carefully enough at two of them (the pen in the Waterman box turned out to be something called a "Golden Star 555", which I think may be a Chinese knockoff of a Parker 51, with an inlaid arrow in the hood like on a Parker 61; and the turquoise colored Parker 45 turned out to have a crack in the section :headsmack:(but does appear to have a gold (or at least a gold colored) nib.

The third pen, a Levenger True Writer, seems to be in pretty pristine shape, though -- including no indication that the converter in the box had ever been used.

Thank you, @Doug C. I have to admit I kept taking it out last night to look at it. Dipped before I bought so I have some idea how it writes, but looking forward to filling and really seeing. @JasonR good luck with the Onoto. Looking forward to seeing that as well.

Now that is one really gorgeous looking beauty. The pens Taccia brings out are really nice. I've not seen many here on the forum, but perhaps one or two will peak out of the woodwork if we're patient and quiet?

@carola Nice little find there! Misfit will likely be interested in hearing more about the piston filler, she asked recently in the Show Us Your Kaweco thread about them.

I forgot to add the Conway Stewart 236 which I had to clear the sleep out of my eyes at 2am in order to put my last second bid in for an Ebay auction out of Australia.

@carola very nice finds at the pen show. And that nib, wow! Can you share a writing sample at some point? I’d appreciate it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
