What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

Very excited.  Just won an auction for a Sailor Kaga Taka Maki-e Tsuru pen with box and papers.  NOS.  Kaga is the Japanese regioon, Kaga is a type of maki-e that entails adding layers of lacquer to obtain a raised surface, and Tsuru is crane.  I've been eyeing this style of maki-e for years, but the prices were always too high.  This was under $300 USD.

What nib lives under that gorgeous cap?

LOL - same here, and I’m much too young to be nostalgic about that ancient era. (No, I’m not.)

Nice find! I think those were for cutting "clippings" out of newspapers or magazines (or clipping coupons, I suppose!).

Yesterday I visited my favourite pen repair guy in his small pen manufacture, where he also produces his own pens - or bespoke pens for crazy pen people who are interested in a pen designed according to their special whims and wishes. We had a very nice day and I went out of there having ordered a bespoke pen for myself, which wasn´t exactly planned beforehand. I have also paid for the pen, which means it should count as my last and very impulsive pen acquisition, although the pen in question doesn´t even exist yet.

Specifications:

Celluloid from the 1930s/1940s

Colour: green cracked ice

Brass trim

Gold plated clip, rather short, which will end above the broad brass ring that will serve as a cap lip

Black cap top and blind cap, shaped very much like the cap top and filling knob of a Pelikan 100N

Old and huge Sheaffer IB nib from around the 1930s

Button filler

The pen will probably be built in September and I am very much looking forward to it.

Snagged this '60s English-made Esterbroook Gold Relief pen that arrived yesterday. It's the same size and shape as an SJ, but with gold trim and a differently styled clip, lever, and cap band. I did not know there were ever 14k Renew Point nibs made! Apparently only for this pen... The nib collar is split, but not at the threads, so there are no leaks 😅

VERY nice nib!

Especially like the left-oblique gold nib. Any chance of a writing sample (sometime in the future)?

Thank you for the post and enjoy your pen.

No new FPs from today's flea market visit.

However, I did pick up six bottles of ink (three brand new ones) for $2.00 and a nice NOS metallic blue Retro 51 Roller ball for $5.00.

A friend was there before me today (about 6:00 A.M.)and had already found/bought two Esterbrook pens (one w/ a 9128 nib) and a Parker Duofold. I'm not sure I would have bought any/all of them because I am focusing most of my energy and activities on the upcoming Commonwealth Pen Show,  in Boston/Somerville on September 27th & 28th.

Not as much line variation as the 9314-B relief nib, so I'm guessing this one is medium. There's definitely a sweet spot with this one, and I still need to do a little tuning. The tines are ever so slightly curved downward over the feed, probably from a previous owner fussing over it.

Thanks for the writing sample.

Is the Waterman Serenity Blue a relatively new bottle? It's been a while since I used it and yours looks particularly nice.

I’m almost at the mid century point, and only remember the late ‘70s in spurts, but I love the pen designs of the time. The Parker 51 really started something!

It actually was dropped off on the doorstep right before I did the writing sample, so yes - quite new! I hadn't used it in ages either, but the bottle I had just up and disappeared, nowhere to be found... Easily fixed 🤪

So impulsive. I made an offer on eBay, it was accepted, and eBay charged my credit card. In a flash it was done. I believe the pen is the discontinued Monteverde Mountains of the World Mauna Kea. It better be. The packaging actually showed boulder brown. Like that is a mountain. The product code looks to be correct based on seeing the code for a rollerball version.

I bought two pens. The first one is a modern Wahl-Eversharp Signature. A good large pen, reminiscent of vintage classics, a matte plastic body, slightly creating the feeling of ebonite and an ebonite feeder (similar to OMAS feeders). Not bad, I'm happy.

... and an interesting but controversial Cartier Vendome pen. The oval barrel and beautiful lacquer finish are a plus. Cons: the pen is to short when open (I don't like to post caps), the nib is tiny and the need to use special cartridges. It certainly won't be my favorite pen, but I'm very pleased to add it to my collection.
