Screw-In Nib Units

Of the pens I own...Esterbrook, Franklin Christoph, Pelikan, TWSBI and the pens made by Renée at Scriptorium all have screw in nibs. Esterbrook will take Osmiroid and Venus screw in nibs as well. I'm not aware of any specific way to tell if a nib is screw in or friction fit other than searching info on the pen brand.

Edited for spell corrections. Damn autocorrect.

If Osmiroid fits Esterbrook and Pelikan fits Esterbrook does Osmiroid fit Pelikan? It would be amazing if my Osmiroid B4 nib, for example, worked in my M200 body!

Probably not, as the barrel of the nib collar below the threads is too wide to fit into the throat of the Pelikan section. Atleast this was the case when I tried it with an Esty nib unit and a Pelikan M150, which I believe are identical in dimensions to the osmiroid/M200 combination you asked about. Worth a try to see for yourself though.

I tried it also and agree. M200's will not take Osmiroid nibs. Too bad.

I found two boxes of Osmiroid screw-in tips the other day. They are from my high school days in the '60s. One box says Osmiroid Drawing Pen Set and the other Osmiroid Italic Pen set. Neither of them have a fountain pen in the box. any suggestions as to what pen I can get that would fit these nibs? I have no idea where the pens went!

While a Pelikan M200 nib unit and an Esterbrook nib unit both use the same thread, 9/32"-36, the nib units are designed differently and are not interchangeable.

I don't believe anybody said they were. It is well known that a pelikan nib will fit in an Esterbrook but not vice versa. Saying this makes no claim that they are interchangeable. That there is a fit is purely coincidental and, in the case of the Pelikan and the Esty, a one way relationship. However, I believe you will find that with many modern pens that use stock German nib units, they are indeed interchangeable.

Sheaffer Fineline nib units recently came across my radar, and though the upper part of the collar looks similar to a Pelikan, the lower end is wide just like and Esty nib unit, so could be pretty certain that they wouldn't fit into a Pelikan section. Don't know if the threads would match. I suppose if they do, one could somehow pare down (emery/file?) the lower end to fit into the throat of a Pelikan section. Alas, going to that much trouble might not be worthwhile. Nib grinds might be more affordable.

Most Esterbrooks have screw-in nib units.

Also Parker Sonnet, Parker Frontier, Sheaffer Cadet and some others and I think some Reform pens.

Furthermore you can put Pelikan nibs in Esterbrooks. I have a blue Estie J pen sporting a Pelikan M400 OM 14K nib. When screwed in the steel collar protrudes from the J pen. Writes perfectly.

No kidding - an Estie with a Pelikan nib. That's surprising because some Pelikan nibs will not fit all other models of Pelikan pens. You got lucky with your Estie and I might try it myself.

I wasn't addressing anyone's claim that Esterbrook and Pelikan M200 nibs were interchangeable; I was merely pointing out that they aren't interchangeable in case there was any confusion.

Sure, a Pelikan M200 nib will fit, and even write, in an Esterbrook, but it looks sure looks ugly with the stainless collar sticking out.

as far as I know

Bock, Schmidt and JoWo sell nib units brands that sell or use these nib units are as follows

Faber-Castell (I havent verified GvFC but I think they do too)

Edison

TWSBI

Online pen co

Visconti

Modern Conway-Stewart

Franklin-Christoph

Conid

modern Kaweco

a lot of kitless pen turners use these units so...

Proprietary nib units that can or can not be extracted

Pelikan

Sailor

Pilot (with the sole exception of the Elabo and Elite)

MB

modern selected Parker pens Sonnet being one of them

Vintage Units

Esterbrook (the most common denominator)

Osmiroid

Venus

Parker (flighter 45 had screw in units)

but will they fit or not is beyond my understanding of pen manufacturing processes and their proprietary set up

I think i'm still missing a bulk of the brands here

I am still hoping someone can tell me what pen I should get to fit my nibs. Thanks.

They should fit vintage Esterbrooks.

I think that if you want an intelligent answer, more than a wild guess, you have to show us a picture of your nibs. The list in a post above shows you how many pens have screw in nibs. Vintage pens are nearly as bad, and most are incompatible with each other. Wahl won't fit Pelikan won't (or shouldn't) fit Esterbrook, won't fit Bexley or Edison. Schmidt won't fit Bock, won't fit Esterbrook etc. etc. etc.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
