Ratnam Kalam Pen

I first heard about the Ratnam pens on this forum. Purchasing a pen from the first pen manufacturer in India; who are still very active; was not an opportunity to miss. After searching around a bit on the forum and facebook I finally found their contact and was pleasantly surprised to have Mr Shiva contact me through Whatsapp! In this age of ecommerce, it was a very interesting experience buying through Whatsapp. Mr Shiva was extremely kind to send me multiple images of all their models and I finally went with the Kalam - a unique desk pen. Hari's excellent informative review convinced me that this was the right choice for my first ebonite, Indian pen!

I received the pen within 2-3 days of ordering through local courier and have been using it happily for the past 4-5 months.

Hi, Thanks for sharing this review and thanks for your kind comments reg my review of similar pens.

The RATNAM stamp on the pen barrel is very interesting. Did you buy this from KV Brahmam and Bros in Rjy?

Reg pen stands, pls visit Reliable Pen Makers on AR Street, near Sutar Chawl. They should have a lot of local brand pen stands available.

Thanks Hari. I bought this pen from Ratnam Pen works. Their address as per their Facebook page is Ratnam pen works, D.No: 10-7-33, Rangreejupeta, kotaghumam, Rajahmundry, India 533101. I initially contacted them over email and then Shiv Responded over whatsapp and helped me choose the right pen.

II willvisit Reliable Pen Markers soon. Many thanks

Great. This company is Ratnam (they are also known as KV Brahmam and Bros) which is different from Ratnamson pens (Ratnam Ballpen works). They are both brothers, and are sons of the founder Ratnam. I hope this helps. I love the vintage heat stamp on your pen.

Best

Hari

Thanks. I had read the history of the two brothers, but was always confused on the two company names. Now finally clear

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
