How Does Sailor Jentle Black Compare To Aurora Black?

Which is better all around in terms of ink flow, feathering, dry time, and bleed through? I already have Jentle Black and I love it but I don't have Aurora Black on hand to try it out.

I am surprised no one has piped up yet. I look forward to reading the answers.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Who uses black ink?

I have like three or four bottles of black ink that came with pens I have bought but I have yet to open any of them.

I did get a bottle of Jentle Black ink when I bought my Sailor Pro Gear Imperial Black Fountain Pen with Zoom Nib.

But I do not have Any of the Sleeping Beauty Black Ink otherwise I would give to a quick test.

Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora, get it now?

I use both inks a lot. To me, they're comparable in terms of blackness, flow, behavior. The Sailor has a touch more shading in a broad italic nib. You really can't go wrong with either.

I see Aurora as a bit darker, both are very well-behaved.

I agree with Joe and nakiana. However, for me Aurora Black is the best black ink ever made - well behaved, just the right flow, etc. And it is about the blackest ink I know of (other than some Noodler's inks). I prefer Aurora because it seems a bit darker than the Sailor.

Pilot Justus "M" nib running Diamine Oxblood

Montegrappa Elmo 02 "F" nib running Carmel Sea Blue

Sailor black inks, in general, have a bit more depth and shade than Aurora and, in my experience, are much more lubricant and well behaved.

Perhaps it was the hype that did it, but I've been disappointed with Aurora ink overall. Not the blackest ink out there (there are plenty darker inks), not as lubricating as the vast majority of inks in my inventory and it smears even when dried on 90g Clairfontain paper (medium-sized spiral notebook I use for notes at work). This has been my singular experience.

I second the disappointment with aurora black after reading such stellar reviews. Mine seems to feather and smear more than I'd like. I have only used Sailor jentle black in the cartridges you get with a pen but I've really liked it. Very lubriacted and smooth with no feathering.

If I were to buy another black that would be it but between my Kiwa-Guro, Aurora, Take Sumi, and Heart of Darkness, I think I've got blacks covered.

I didn't think Aurora Black was anything special, either, and I agree there has been some hype about it - possibly because, compared with commonly available lacklustre blacks like Parker Quink, it's a distinct improvement. Going by my experience of cartridges that came with a pen, I'd also go with Sailor.

Who uses black ink?

Well, many more people than use brown or burgundy or pretty much any colour apart from blue.

I had occasion today to compare the two, as I had a freshly opened cartridge of Sailor Jentle Black. Only problem was that I was way too lazy to do a comparison in the same pen, and I don't see any point in trying to compare how they write unless it's the same pen. So I just tapped some of the Sailor Jentle Black out of the cartridge and smeared it around wetly. I put some Aurora Black from a bottle in an empty Sailor cartridge and did the same thing. If blackness is a major factor, there's hardly a contest, and the scan noticeably understates the case, IMHO. It's true that Aurora black is a wet ink, and that may lead to some problems. Sailor Jentle seems dryer, though rather than "dry" it is perhaps "normal" in wetness.
