New Pelikan M800 - Burnt Orange

Since it seems that you are in New York, perhaps you could pay a visit to Fountain Pen Hospital to see it in person, before making a decision (although I understand that this is a risky proposition: I could never enter FPH, or any other good B&M, with my wallet. Under the risk of going broke

Good luck with your decision.

😬 Thank you ... I feel understood. They're actually holding an EF until tomorrow when there should be a further discount. But I doubt that I'll be completely rational and objective once I enter that store. 😔

The lack of an ink window has me thinking. The Cafe Creme has an ink window so it could have easily been done. Possible explanations - it's a different material (not injection-molded); or the ink window was left out for purely aesthetic reasons (it's a cleaner look).

Maybe I'm just insane to even be asking these questions. 🙃

The Pelikan M800 Burnt Ornage is such a gorgeous pen I bought two from our friends at Vanness.

I had a couple of spare M800 nib units to which I installed vintage oversized 14k wet noodle flex nibs. They were very advanced and tough nib setups to say the least, but after some work, the desired goal was achieved.

The great news is that I saved the original nib units so I can switch them back to original configuration if I want to, by simply swapping nib units!

Edited to add picture!

What ink are you using in that M800???

My Burnt Orange won't be coming until next April (!!!)....but I want an "orange-y" ink to complement it.....

Thanks!

Always try to get the dibs....on fountain pens with EF nibs!!

OK, this bird has landed...

And I wanted to post these pictures because of the recent discussion about the decline in quality of Pelikan nibs ... This is an EF nib.

Note that the ink slit hits the tip at the exact center, and cuts through the design in the exact middle (I did see another nib where the slit was not exactly centered)...

The nib tip of this EF is round; but it is not a "blob." Instead, it is a marvelously delicate tip and writes like a real German EF (i.e., comparable to a Japanese F).

I would say it has a medium wet flow, and with MB even has a bit of feedback like my best Aurora nibs.

The color is engaging. I prefer to call it "Chinese lacquer" rather than "burnt orange." It has that orange vermilion tone like the early Parker Duofold is said to have.

All told, I'm happy with this pen. As you can tell.

Calabria.......

Just BEAUTIFUL!!

Got word today that the Burnt Orange I ordered about a month ago -- and was given an ETA of next April - was in to the vendor...

Unfortunately.....since I placed that order I've added expenses onto the credit card I was planning to use for the purchase!!! :yikes:

Soooooo.....my order will move "to the rear".....

Gonna be a LONG winter's wait, though.......!!

BTW.....the BO I've ordered is also an EF....

DasXF ... I had your post in mind when I uploaded the pictures ... My Stresemann had to be reground (it was wider), but this nib is pretty much perfect. Maybe Pelikan is reading FPN and responding to the stated preferences of its fans (Hallo Hannover!)??

Calabria, congratulations on the new pen. It's a beauty.

I have two M800 EF and the nibs on both of them are like yours. If I write with them side by side with a Pilot 823 F, to my eyes the lines seem to have about the same width (maybe the Pelikans are just a hair thicker, but I can't really be sure).

Enjoy your new pen.

I have a fair collection of Pelikan pens. I find the striped celluoid types the more formal, especially the brown tortoise and the grey Stresmann. I have a few of the cities series and find the Piazza Navona the most attractive, and possible the prettiest of all the Pelikans I have. I like the burnt orange because the color is outstanding , the orange subdued, a creamy orange vs a screaming in your face bright orange complimented by the very dark chocolate colors. I have mine loaded now with some of Pelikan's Brilliant Brown ink, and have some of the Diamine Autumn Oak on order to try in it.

I have a couple of the Parker Duofold pens, in their Big Red color, one an original from the late 1920's the other a modern Centennial version, and find the Pelikan orange a little more to my liking.

Regards

Jeff
