Sailor (Pen & Message) Fuyu-Gare

"Fuyu-gare" refers to winter, when plants are withered. Someone has translated into "wintry desolation" and it's a beautiful translation.

It's a nice dark grey. When it's wet enough I could disguise it as black.

The scan on the right looks truer to its colour. The photo is somewhat too warm.fpn_1432902007__sailor-fuyugare-spl.jpg

Writing sample

Nice water resistance.

Comparison

I don't like grey inks very much so I have a limited collection of them. Fuyu-gare is my favourite among these four. Diamine Grey is quite nice too, a neutral grey. Gris orage is too dirty looking.

Even though this is quite nice, I too find it difficult to get really excited about grey inks. I think the Kobe Kaigan Stone Grey is perhaps the exception.

That's exactly what I feel about greys. I should check out that Kobe grey! What's the number of this Kobe?

Pretty sure it's 31.

In other news, Fuyu-Gare looks amazing and I need some.

Yep, #31.

I admit, this Fuyu-Gare is definitely growing on me.

Very interesting grey ink, however it's not a must have for me (especially at the Sailor JDM exclusive prices) like Cigar was. Nice review though!

So many inks, so little time...

I kind of hate grey inks, as they typically bore me. Kobe #31 won me over with its dramatic shading, but that's it. However, I kind of love this ink. I even bought a back up bottle. :)

Well, that might seal the deal for me!

Great review! Now I'm torn though... I'm waiting until August to put in my next Sailor order and not sure if I should give this ink a shot or stick to the plan of ordering Kobe 31

Interestingly, on my monitor the Iro Fuyu-syogun looks a bit blue, the J. Herbin Gris Orage looks somewhat brown, and the P&M Fuyu-gare is greenish. Only the Diamine looks like straight, unadulterated grey. Probably, no one would notice unless they were all side by side like this.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

bstnnyc, how are you doing with your self-imposed "two bottles per month" ink quota? I have given up on mine LOL

haha are we talking about just Sailor or all ink brands? (Across all ink brands I'm more than a little over  ) If only looking at Sailors though, it's surprisingly right on track! But I can't make any promises about how things will go as we get closer to the holidays... especially if you and other members keep posting these very tempting reviews and writing samples :P Which Sailors are next on your shortlist?

It would be Bung Box L'Amant and Lycoris Red (still debating on this one), and maybe P&M Sanyasou as well. After a green hunt in spring I'm now having a craving for purples. :D

Oh nice! I've actually been in a purplish mood too :) The BB Sweet Potato Purple you just reviewed is on top of the list and then maybe the Usagiya Pione that Saskia said might be one of the first inks to have too much sheen. As a sheenaholic I'm really curious about that one now haha

The Sweet Potato Purple is a seasonal ink that doesn't show as 'in stock' until September or so. At least, that was the case when I bought mine last year.

Ooo, every now and then a review of this pops up and I go all gooey  I adore this colour. Thanks for showing it off so well.

It's now on the list.

Near the top.

Just under Cigar, Stag Beatle and that Super5 Atlantic . . .

having seen Fuyu-syogun personally its more of a "cool" gray thats mostly gray with blue undertones but this one is interesting I seriously have to get this ink along with Cigar... :X

OOOH! I like this. Dang. Another ink for the "want" list.

Sigh.

Thanks for the review. And not.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."
