Fountain Pen Section Pliers

I was looking for section pliers online and found a web site that said that section pliers are really just spark plug wire pliers available at automotive stores. Sure enough, I found them at Harbor Freight at the best price I have seen.

I have both the KD tools, and the ones from Harbor Freight. The HF ones work OK, but they are not nearly as strong or well made as the ones made by KD.

The Father Terry Koch (RIP) method: buy a cheap pliers; grind the teeth off smooth with a rotary grinder; place a short length of rubber tubing over the jaws. Do-it-yourself section pliers. I've been using mine for five years or so - they work great.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

Like Ron, I've had the K-D 135 pliers and also the HF kind. I just this evening placed an order to replace my K-D set because of the extensive use they've had; I've chewed through the protective coating on the jaws. The ones from HF are pristine -- they don't grip at all well, so I just don't use them. But they were very inexpensive...

I also made a set of the Father Terry pliers. I find these useful as well; they don't work as well for me on sections, but for some pens I want to clamp both the section and the barrel, and for that application nothing beats a pair of each style.

I had an enthusiastic individual use a set of sparkplug pliers on a 51 hood that was stuck. Wow, did that shatter into a lot of pieces... Yes, it was a lot of force used, but taught me a lesson...

An interesting design I intend to follow up on is to adapt the FT method to a small set of Vice-Grips I have. No, its not as silly as it sounds. While Vice-Grips are capable of exerting very strong pressure, they have the advantage of being able to be set to a very precise and known grip strength, likely preventing inadvertent use of excessive force. Might be a little slower to use than the K-D pliers, but more sure.

Regards,

Gerry

What are these K-D pliers that you folks are referring to? Who sells them?

I have been using the Bionic Wrench that Giovanni (Tryphon) sells and while being more expensive than the spark plug wrench pliers, I like them a lot better..

I find I have more control, especially over the pressure I put on the section when removing it.

This is a pair of the K-D pliers. You can get them from Fountain Pen Hospital for $25.00 a pair, or from an auto parts store for less than $10.00 a pair. Do not be fooled by cheaper imitations. The easiest way to spot an imitation is to look for the bumpy "shoulders" that stick out at the upper ends of the grips. I've never seen a cheap set that had these bumps. But look for the K-D 135 imprint around the pivot to be sure.

I tried the Bionic Wrench and found that I don't like it. Personal style.

I have to admit that I like the fuel line hose andpliers, or the Fr. Terry pliers more than the spark plug pliers simply because there's more to cushon to the grip than you get with the spark plug pliers. More traction, and cushon = fewer broken pens IMP. The bionic wrench works, but I'm used to the other afer 17 years or so.

I just had to resac one of my early 51s. I've had it long enough that it's now on the second under my ownership - has to be 15 years or so. Sweet nib too!
