Ink Review: Noodler's Ink, Hellfire.

Grade: 76.25%.

Paper: Norcom Composition.

I bought Noodler's Hellfire because I usually stick to black and white media when drawing/writing, and I thought I needed to mix things up a bit. First things first, despite its name, Hellfire is a pink colored ink. It doesn't lean toward red, orange, or even yellow. It is a bright transparent pink color that's meant to be used as a highlighter ink.

Not many things make me miss taking notes in college, but as someone who color coded everything, it does make me wish I had Hellfire back then to break up the doldrums of Business Ethics. The first thing that pops into my mind when I look at Hellfire is cotton candy or watermelon. I don't really consider this an ink that I would use to write with every day. Not because of embarrassment, although I did get some looks at work, but because it's a little too hard for me to read on its own. Which, honestly, is not its main function.

Like I said, Hellfire is a highlighter ink that does its job well. It pops off the page under normal lighting and will even fluoresce under a black light. Don't expect Blue Ghost levels of fluorescence. Think more of reflective safety vest at night. It drys very quickly and won't bleed through cheap paper. It's not a water fast ink, but you can see that it will put up a fight and resist being washed away. It will feather easily, but let's be honest, this ink should go in a felt tip pen and not in a flexible dip pen.

Overall, I love this ink. And if you love choosing your own ink colors and feel like trying out a refillable highlighter pen, then you should definitely check out Noodler's Hellfire.

It was a pleasure. I love getting into the lesser reviewed Noodler's inks.

I love this pink but it reminds me of a favourite - Diamine Hope Pink which I write with (what else?!) and also use as a highlighter. Thank you for a fabulous review!

I don't know why, but Noodler's Hellfire makes my eyes hurt.

  • 2 months later...

I finally got around to taking a picture of Hellfire in a Platinum Preppy. It took about a week of occasional office use for the feed to work out all the yellow ink when I refilled the cartridge.

And here's the reverse so you can see the show through/bleed through.

So happy, this ink arrived today. I am going to write notes to everyone in the office with it!!

Haven't tried this one. I have a few of the highlighter inks: Lightning Blue, Georgia Peach, and a big bottle of Dragon Catfish Pink (which I like, but I actually prefer Georgia Peach better colorwise because it's just a little different). And I had a sample of Dragon Catfish Green, but it seems to be out of stock a lot of places these days (that one actually went into the Preppy highlighter pen that cam with the DCP; the others are all in some cheapie Japanese brush pens that came with bottles of Kung Te Cheng -- which work great as highlighter pens, BTW...).

If I make it up to the Commonwealth Pen show, I may stop by the Noodler's table and ask if Nathan would consider doing a purple HL ink....

Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the lovely review! I like the fact that it can be used to write with, despite being a highlighter ink :)

Nice. What pen have you decided to pair it with?

A purlple HL ink would be amazing. I actually use Dragon's Napalm as my 'go to' HL ink. I find that the feed and felt tip on the Preppy HL does an amazing job taming it. So you might be able to get away with choosing a regular purple and just using it as a HL.

Thank you very much. i can't wait to try Noodler's Lightning Blue HL ink. I also think it would be cool to see if you can write with it.

Subjectively speaking, I'd give this ink a -1 (minus one) for color but an 11 (eleven) for your review.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
