Onoto The Pen: Identification And Dating?

Nightcap

Recommended Posts

I have recently acquired an Onoto "The Pen," I am interested in learning more. Would anyone be able to estimate the year of manufacture?

The pen has been refurbished and writes well. I have it loaded with Diamine Onyx Black at the moment.

Markings:

Onoto The Pen

De LA Rue & Co. Ltd London

At the top of the pen it has:

541

240

The nib is marked:

Warrantied

14 C

TDLR & CO LTD

22

A picture of the whole pen would help greatly.

The numbers you quote suggest to me a lever filler, as does the nib details.

However, "Onoto the Pen" rather than "Onoto the Lever Pen" usually refers to a piston filling type.

If it is the latter filling system, can you open it at the section & take a photo of the internals. That will also help the ID

It is indeed a lever filler. I will include a few more photos, these are from the seller. They have excellent handwriting, but were unsure of the pen's model number or date of manufacture. The pen was serviced by the owner prior to the seller.

DLR did make "Onoto Lever Fillers" (there is a very nice example on ebay here: 201347510869 )

However most of their lever filling production from this period (later 1930's) were "The De La Rue Pen" , the Junior, or the 1332 model.

Earlier models such as the New Swift are lever fillers worth hunting out

That is very handsome handwriting that reflects well both on the writer and on the nib.
