San Francisco Pen Show - 2015 Update

Not to be a troll or anything but, whoever is responsible for the sfpenshow.com site may want to change a couple of things.

The Web site announces that at 6:30 the doors will be loked. I assume they will be locked.

And hors d'hovres is, I assume, meant to be hors-d’oeuvres.

If we're going to insist that the world learn proper handwriting, we'd best be up on our spelling.

Looking forward to the show.

Unfortunately, I don't think they had a professional secretary or proofer check the web pages.

And speaking from someone who hated english classes, I rely on spell-check in WORD. Although it is amazing what words get through a spell checker, words that I never new existed.

See you at the show. I will be either at the registration desk or my selling table, most of the time.

BTW, Trav - Feel free to copy the YouTube and post it... over there. The Doctor has banned me from his board, so if you are doing BD wishes to the Boy of the Farm, I'd be pleased for you to post it at FPB.

Isn't there a joke about the drummer being the guy that hangs out with the banned?

It's full of stars. :o

This will be my first penshow too! And I've only been in this hobby for two months now. I've no idea what to expect, but I'm so excited!

Wait till you see FIVE of those pen holders, with a total of 500 pens.

I am quite excited about the show this weekend. I had taken a few months off from pens, but now I am ready to charge back in with both credit cards ablazin'. (pun intended)

Is there a list of nibmeisters who will be coming and doing nib work?

Thanks to those who have worked so hard to pull this off. It is almost hard to imagine more fun than last year is even possible!

Mike it work-Mike Masuyama

Straits Pens-Sunny Koh

Greg Minuskin (will probably take pens back to his shop, at least that is what he did last year)

I think there are a couple more, but I don't remember who they are.

The venue does not suck, View from my room tonight is below, already had great meet-and-greets with lots of people, far, far better than the online contact you have with pen friends and vendors. This. Is. It.

Never been to a show before but I am finally going to be in town when this thing is happening for the first time in like 4 years. Any advice for someone who has a few nibs that they'd like worked on? I assume that involves showing up really early and standing in line for awhile. Any idea how early and how long? And how many nibs one could realistically have worked in the course of the day/how many nibmeisters I could visit? Also, are there any other services available at the shows beyond nib work? I have a beautiful lapis senior Endura that I barely use because it has an annoying rattle in the filling system somewhere, and I'd like to get that fixed, if that's even possible. Otherwise I plan on walking around wide-eyed and covetous.

Speaking of, are these things cash-only?

Last year was my first pen show and I had a fantastic time. I will certainly be there tomorrow. Speaking from experience only, Mike was the one I visited last year. I also went on the second day of the show last year and as soon as they let us "public" in, I dashed to Mike's table and put my name down. If he is as busy this year as last year, he would already have a ton of pens to work on from the first day people. I ended up getting my pens worked on onsite by Mike at the end of the day. By then he limited to 2 pens per person only. Others have to leave their pens with him and wait for him to work on them back at his shop before mailing them back.

I remember from last year, Mike took credit card for payment also but of course cash is king.

I don't know about experts working on pen mechanics. Last year there was really no one to do that. I read that there are some people that work on pens there this year but they will probably have to take your pen back to their shop. I don't think they will work on it there.

See you tomorrow and bring your credit card/cash/checkbook.

Managed to carve out a quick trip to the show today....but only for about 2 hours.....

But did manage to hold in my hands the new W-E Decoband pens and test drive one.....Wow! These are some serious oversize pens and gorgeous too....ended up putting a deposit on the rosewood ebonite pen with the wild red monster feed..... can't wait to have it......Had a very nice chat with Syd the 'Wahlnut' too, great guy....

Also, got ol' Mike M to do his nibmagic on 3 of my pens plus enjoyable conversation with him and his lovely wife about pens, pen shows, Japan, and yes, surfing..........nice!......

Other than that did a quick tour of the tables, but it was still relatively early (got there around 11:30am....) and so a few tables were still empty. but still saw a lot of very nice pens...

Glad I made it even for a short while....

Was hard to go back to work after that.... :)

Any suggestions on what to bring to the show?

A notepad for writing samples?

Loupe for checking out the nibs on used pens?

Bag and padding for holding stuff?

Lots of cash?

Where to park?

Many vendors can accept credit cards, and some take checks. We do both, but on the safe side you should bring some cash. It will allow you to make purchases more quickly when the tables are getting swamped.

We provide ink and a few different papers for customers to use for writing testing, but other sellers have their own policies, so it's wise to bring paper.

Parking is no problem .... Parking garage and a ticket given by the folks at the sign in desk will reduce daily parking expense to $5.

We were two tables down from Mike M and while I did not see a line per se, I can't speak for how many nibs were in the queue.

Joel and Sherrell were there from ink-pen.com, and can often take a look at a pen and advise you on the work needed.

Be sure to stop by and say hello!

Just heard that US 101 is closed both directions at Burlingame until 5pm today due to downed power lines. If you are coming to the Pen Show from north of Redwood City, you will need to find an alternate route.

I just got home after closing the show down and then some bonus time with Mike & Emiko Masuyama. I'll write more when I have the energy and some food in me, but I wanted to praise and thank the team for another great show this year! Once again I am broke, tired and happy. I'm already looking forward to next year.

How can one top 500 inks to try and free fanny packs?!?!
